Valve Releases Steam Controller
Oct 1st 2013, 00:11, by Peter Suciu

Valve's Steam Controller could be just the thing to convince legions of PC gamers to abandon the mouse-and-keyboard interface -- or not. "Going rogue and completely reinventing the UI for games would be a disaster. Steam doesn't have that kind of clout by a long shot," said IDC's Lewis Ward. "What they can do is to try and find a happy medium between two different UI schemes and not blow it."

Valve Software on Friday announced the Steam Controller, the third part of its trio of initiatives designed to bring Linux-based gaming to the living room. Valve dubbed the controller "a different kind of gamepad."

valve steam controller

It features dual circulator trackpads driven by the player's thumbs; each has a high-resolution haptic pad at its base. These pads are clickable, allowing the entire surface to act as a button. They are meant to offer higher fidelity than traditional handheld controllers.

Valve's concept is to allow whole genres of games that previously were playable only with a keyboard and mouse interface to be playable on a TV. This includes the popular first-person shooter genre that often calls on precise aiming within a large visual field.

16 Points of Interaction

The new Steam Controller further offers a total of 16 buttons that replace not only the buttons on the mouse, but also the more traditional gamepad functions. Eight of these buttons can be accessed without needing to move one's thumb off the trackpads, Valve suggested.

In between the trackpads is a touchscreen that also can be clicked like a button.

Instead of the traditional "rumble" feature that current controllers provide as a way of delivering a tactile experience, the Steam Controller uses haptic technology, which sends vibrations to the touchpads.

"People are used to joysticks, but these haptic touchpads are a different approach," said independent video game analyst Billy Pidgeon. "This is quite different from other PC controllers."

Not Reinventing the Wheel

While Valve aims to create a new style of interface for gaming, "it's not a matter of reinventing the wheel so much as trying to design something that both PC and console gamers will like, and that both PC and console game developers can design for without requiring much extra work," Lewis Ward, IDC's research manager for gaming, told LinuxInsider.

"It's unique in that it tries to split the difference between a standard console controller and a mice and keyboard proxy," he pointed out.

"They wanted an input mechanism that would support all Steam games with little or no UI reworking necessary on the part of developers, and so the controller will -- hopefully -- have an intuitive feel for mice and keyboard PC gamers while obviously being designed for a 10-foot living room experience and being mappable to standard console controller UI schemes," Ward explained.

Console Gamers to the PC

This controller also could be a way to get traditional console gamers -- those who aren't used to the mouse and keyboard interface -- to try some of the PC-style games that Valve's SteamCloud might offer.

"Steam is trying to position it that way, but they don't have a previous controller for this to build on. Consider the console gamer who hasn't played PC as much, and this could be a gateway for those gamers," Pidgeon told LinuxInsider.

"This is good for some games, but it isn't a true replacement for the keyboard gamer," he said. Still, "it could bring the console gamer to the PC. There is also no reason why Steam in the living room might not support the keyboard as well. It would be stupid for it not to."

Going Rogue

The biggest concern is that some PC gamers might not be so keen to use a controller. Companies such as Microsoft have tried -- mostly without success -- to bring such devices to the PC.

"Computer gamers still prefer keyboard and mouse controls, so Valve is taking a risk by creating an alternative to the keyboard," noted Pidgeon.

That said, "Microsoft has done a number of controllers, including a pretty terrific joystick, and has allowed Xbox controllers to be used with the computer," he pointed out, "so there is some history that gamers could be open to alternative controllers."

There are limits, however.

"Going rogue and completely reinventing the UI for games would be a disaster. Steam doesn't have that kind of clout by a long shot," said Ward.

"What they can do is to try and find a happy medium between two different UI schemes and not blow it," he suggested.

"That alone would be quite a feat, and that's what this controller is all about. Its chances of success will mainly depend on the games as well as the price of the various Steam Machine bundles," said Ward. "The hybrid nature of the controller is risky, and it's impossible to make a call on how well it serves both masters -- PCs and consoles."

France to Follow Through on Tiny Google Fine
Sep 30th 2013, 21:41, by David Vranicar

Today in international tech news: France says it will follow through on its June threat to fine Google for privacy policy changes. Also: Now China says it IS going to allow video game consoles; Siemens will cut loads of jobs; and a Canadian compiles some of the most bizarre images Street View has to offer.

In France, data protection officials announced that they will impose sanctions against Google for the company's failure to stick to a three-month deadline to tweak its privacy policies.

The fine stems from Google's melding of different privacy policies in Europe into a single policy that applies to all its platforms -- Gmail, YouTube, Google+ and so on. The move unfairly subjected people to data collection, France said in June, warning that unless it made some changes, Google would be fined.

The size of the fine, though, would likely be negligible. France's main privacy body said in June that the max fine against Google could reach all of US$200,000.

Germany fined Google roughly $200,000 earlier this year for data collection that took place while the company compiled images for Street View. At the time, German officials said they would have sought a bigger fine, save a European Union regulation that capped fines for accidental data collection.

France has had many grievances with Google -- Google News displaying content from French news sites, for example, or Google' propensity to skirt taxes.

China Offers Plan for Video Game Consoles

In a reversal of a reversal, China outlined a plan that would end the nation's longstanding ban on the sale of video game consoles in the country.

The plan calls for allowing foreign companies to offer certain Internet services in the Middle Kingdom on the condition that the companies set up shop in the new Shanghai Free Trade Zone. A statement from the State Council was pretty vague about what, exactly, foreign companies would be allowed to do in the free-trade zone, but the video game console ban is apparently part of the deal: The document specifically mentions "game machines sales and services."

In January, news broke that Beijing was planning to lift its decade-old ban on video game consoles. That story was quickly debunked by Chinese regulators, who within days made it clear that the ban was still in effect.

Now, it looks like it's game on.

There has been quite a bit of confusion and misinformation about what will fly in the free-trade zone in Shanghai. Last week, China reportedly unbanned Facebook, Twitter and The New York Times website in the free-trade zone. That story, however, was quickly shot down.

Microsoft recently announced a partnership with Chinese Internet television company BesTV New Media. The Seattle Times was among those to speculate that the partnership could perhaps be a way for Microsoft to sell the Xbox in China.

Siemens to Nix 15,000 Jobs

Germany's Siemens announced it will cut 15,000 jobs -- including 5,000 in Germany -- over the next 12 months as part of a US$8 billion-plus cost-cutting scheme.

Siemens, Europe's biggest engineering firm, is reportedly trying to keep pace with more profitable rivals like GE and Switzerland's ABB.

Siemens makes a variety of products ranging from hearing aids to gas turbines.

The company has not yet laid off any workers and hopes to rely heavily on attrition and severance deals.

Canadian Collects Bizarre Google Street View Shots

Candian filmmaker and artist Jon Rafman has compiled some of the more unusual images that Google Street View has to offer.

Operating under the belief that Google's Street View camera "almost symbolizes a modern god," Rafman has spent hours upon hours scouring for interesting nuggets buried on Street View.

His website does indeed have some crazy photos, including car accidents, people arrested, animals and more.

Samsung, LG to mass-produce flexible displays
Sep 30th 2013, 20:33, by Maximus

Samsung Display and LG Display are poised to embark on mass production of organic light-emitting diodes for flexible displays for smartphones in October, according to industry sources on Sunday.

Samsung Display is reported to use a 5.5-generation (1300x1500mm) line at the OLED plant in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, and LG Display is to operate a 4.5-generation (730x920mm) line in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.

"Within this year, Samsung and LG will have a monthly production capacity of 1.5 million and 35,000 flexible panels, respectively," a source said.

On expectations that flexible displays will be put into mass production, the sales outlook of related companies improved.

Seoul-based securities firm Korea Value 21 said sales of the AP System, a flexible-display equipment maker, will rise by 20 percent this year, compared to last year.

"The flexible display segment is expected to generate momentum in the display sector," said analyst Lee Deuk-ho of the securities firm.

Samsung and LG's new smartphones, which will reportedly be unveiled next month, are said to be plastic-based, light and unbreakable. Since the technology is still in its nascent stage, users will not be able to change the shape.

"The newly launched curved phones will not be completely flexible," Samsung SDI's CEO Park Sang-jin said last Wednesday. However, he added, "We have developed the technology to make batteries a little curved and to fix them after being curved."

It will take a few more years for flexible displays to be able to fully take different forms and to be rolled up like paper, a source said.

The global flexible display market is expected to jump from $21.9 million in value this year to $94.8 million in 2014 and to $11.7 billion in 2020, according to Colorado-based market research firm IHS.

Snapdragon and Exynos variants of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 compared on video
Sep 30th 2013, 19:43, by Maximus

The Galaxy Note 3, like the Galaxy S4, comes in two variants – one powered by a quad-core Snapdragon processor and the other by Samsung's in-house octa-core Exynos. However, compared to the S4, the Galaxy Note 3 runs much faster versions of each processor (Snapdragon 800 vs. Snapdragon 600, and Exynos 5420 vs. Exynos 5410), but which of those is the better performer?

The folks over Gadget Portal took the time to compare both variants on video, and, at least in benchmark scores, the Snapdragon variant was just a few points ahead of the Exynos variant. Also, Gadget Portal notes that the Exynos variant consumes a larger amount of RAM in idle – around 1.6-1.8 GB, compared to 1.1-1.2 GB taken by the Snapdragon model. However, in actual usage, they note that both devices are "almost same in UI smoothness & speed," though we'll naturally have to get more detailed comparisons to make a final verdict.

In the end, it doesn't exactly matter which model you buy – both will perform great and handle anything you throw at them, though those wanting to put on a stock Android ROM would want to go for the Snapdragon variant, as Qualcomm is better with releasing the necessary sources to make custom ROMs work. The Exynos variant also loses out on the 4k video recording feature, but let's face it, 4k video is not something that's going to be important for at least the next 3-5 years.

Take a look at the comparison video below.

J'son & Partners Consulting: «MVNO market in Russia and in the world: Main Trends and Prospects for Development"
Sep 30th 2013, 20:31, by Maximus

The company J'son & Partners Consulting presented the summary results of his study "The market MVNO in Russia and in the world: Main Trends and Prospects for Development", where it is noted that the concept of the mobile operator without its own frequency resource and base stations (other infrastructure elements may be present) - Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) at this point is already well established in the developed countries of Europe and Asia, the U.S. and Canada, and gradually spread to emerging markets. projected western research agencies in the medium term (2016-2017). MVNO subscriber base in the world will increase to 200-300 million, while Western Europe and the United States will retain the lead. MVNO market in Western Europe is the most mature market of virtual operators around the world. It is characterized by a high proportion of MVNO-subscribers (about 15%), covered a huge variety of market segments and target user groups and business models. MVNO operate as a mass (discounters), and in niche markets (for example, oriented towards migrants, travelers and etc.). In recent years, there are new-generation MVNO specializing, for example, inter-machine communication (M2M), mobile financial services, etc. Many fixed-line operators provide MVNO to expand their bundled offerings (broadband Internet, fixed telephony , pay TV and mobile communications ), increase ARPU and reduce churn. As of mid-September 2013, according to the data Roskomnadzora, 80 Russian companies issued 109 MVNO-licenses. According to J'son & Partners Consulting, in Russia at that date actually worked a little more than a dozen projects, excluding the sub-brands of operators (for example, "Just to talk" of "MegaFon", "E" on the SMARTS, etc.). However, about more than 30 companies with MVNO-licenses were non-geographic numbers in the numbering codes DEF-941, 958, etc. In general, the outlook is mixed MVNO in Russia and will be largely determined by industry regulators. The main driver of the market may be the largest mobile operators awareness of the benefits of using this model and finding the optimum for a business strategy. Up to this point, or to a significant change in sectoral legislation, MVNO market in Russia will be in its infancy in many developing countries.

Samsung to mass produce flexible displays from October
Sep 30th 2013, 20:33, by Maximus

Samsung reportedly confirmed that it would launch a smartphone next month with a flexible display, and now a new report backs indicates that Samsung (and LG) will begin mass producing flexible displays from October. These displays will be 5.5-inches in size, which means that either the device won't be the Galaxy Note 3, or it will be a smaller-sized variant of the phablet.

As it has repeatedly been mentioned, these flexible displays won't allow you to actually change the shape of the screen/device, though Samsung has stated that it "developed the technology to make batteries a little curved and to fix them after being curved." The report cites unnamed industry sources as saying that Samsung is looking to produce 1.5 million flexible panels each month this year, something which we've heard of before in a separate report.

Top tips for new Nokia Asha Touch owners
Sep 30th 2013, 19:26, by Maximus

There are loads of different things you can do with phones like the Nokia Asha 310, from changing themes to make your phone stand out, to taking photographs. We've put together a list to help you get the best out of your Nokia Asha Touch.

How to move icons

It's easy to customise the menu on your Nokia Asha Touch device, simply by tapping and holding the icon you want to move. Hold it for a couple of seconds, and you'll see it get slightly brighter – you can then drag and drop it to a different position on the menu screen. Tap the screen when you've finished moving icons.

Connectivity shortcuts for Asha Touch

There's a drop-down menu on Asha Touch phones that makes turning Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other options on and off a one-touch deal. Simply drag your finger down from the top of the screen to bring up the menu, and tap the icon you want to turn different wireless functions on or off.

Hover your cursor over the image below for interactive options

How to change themes

Changing the theme on your Nokia Asha can make a big difference to how it looks. Tap Settings, followed by 'Themes'. Click 'Select theme', and then pick the theme you want. When you change the theme, you'll see different colours for text, different background colours – even the icons can be updated depending on which theme you've downloaded.

Download new themes

The ability to change the look of your phone with themes is made even more impressive by the sheer number of personalised themes on the Nokia Store. To download them, open Settings, 'Themes', 'Themes download' and then 'Nokia Store'. Make sure you're logged into your Nokia account, and you'll be able to browse and download the latest themes for your Nokia Asha.
