Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today demonstrated voice with HD quality and video calling over TD-LTE (VoLTE) using commercial LTE smartphones at its Wireless Innovation Lab & Demo Center (WILD Center) in Shanghai. This is the first time a commercial 4G phone has been used to showcase HD voice over TD-LTE, and it marks a key milestone in the maturity of the TD-LTE ecosystem, enabling operators worldwide to provide a superior quality voice and video calling experience for TD-LTE subscribers.

As part of the demonstration, Sony's 4G phone Xperia SP M35t was used, which supports TDD/FDD LTE, TD-SCDMA, HSPA and GSM over 13 bands. Xperia SP M35t has been publicly announced and will be commercially launched when 4G licenses are released in China.

Charlie Liu, Vice President and CTO of Sony Mobile China, said: "Leveraging the close collaboration with Ericsson, I am very happy and proud to see the successful demonstration of voice over TD-LTE call on our Xperia SP M35t over Ericsson's TD-LTE network. Xperia SP M35t, which was publicly announced yesterday in Shanghai, is our first commercially ready TD-LTE smartphone that will support voice over LTE. Together, we are ready to deliver an end-to-end solution and are well prepared to make contributions to the commercialization of TD-LTE in the world and the arrival of LTE in China in the near future."

Jan Signell, President of Ericsson North East Asia, said: "With today's demonstration, we have brought VoLTE yet another step closer to full commercialization, contributing to the true globalization of the TD-LTE ecosystem. We are especially pleased to be achieving this breakthrough, together with Sony, when China is about to launch the world's largest TD-LTE network. We believe that our undisputed technology leadership in LTE will support China Mobile and other operators."

A connection to the Core & IMS nodes located in Ericsson's VoLTE Competence Center in Anyang, South Korea was used for the HD voice and video calling over LTE demonstrations, using Ericsson's end-to-end core and radio network infrastructure.

This February, Ericsson successfully supported China Mobile in demonstrating the world's first dual-mode HD VoLTE call between TD-LTE and LTE FDD at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

As a firm supporter of TD-LTE, Ericsson also has a clear leadership position in the LTE market, with more than 160 LTE/Evolved Packet Core contracts on six continents. Ericsson's well-proven LTE solutions support the world's busiest networks. It has signed contracts with nine out of the 10 highest ranked mobile operators by revenue.
