Next-generation IS Tizen, led by Samsung Electronics and Intel, to be developed as an automobile platform as well.
It was confirmed that the Tizen alliance is cooperating with major auto makers, such as Toyota, Jaguar and Landrover. Samsung Electronics has already applied Tizen to digital cameras, and is planning to apply it to household appliances as well as smartphones and TVs. The Korean electronics giant is expected to break away from dependency on Android by pitting Tizen against Android, and speed up the process of gaining independence in the platform ecosystem in the long run.
At 'Tizen Developer Summit 2013' held on November 11 at the Ritz-Carlton Seoul, the Tizen alliance said that they are cooperating with Toyota, Jaguar and Landrover to mount Tizen in the In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system.
"Tizen is a platform capable of open scalability," said Mark Skarpness, director of Systems Engineering in the Open Source Technology Center at Intel. "As we are cooperating with Toyota and Jaguar in IVI, scalability to TV, camera, wearable devices and refrigerators is guaranteed." He added "to further increase scalability, Tizen 3.0, to be released in Q3 2014, will cut the RAM and storage space resources in half. Tizen can be applied to devices with lower specifications."
It was first disclosed that Tizen-based products are already in the market, and more products will be released next year.
"Rumor had it that Samsung Electronics already released Tizen products, and that is true," said Choi Jong-deok, co-chair of the Tizen Technical Steering Group and VP of Samsung Electronics. "We applied Tizen to the mirrorless cameras NX300 and NX300M." He added "the NX300M boots up in 0.5 seconds only, and has such an excellent capturing ability that it can shoot 9 frames in a second at 20 mega pixels."
Mr. Choi also demonstrated the developer version Tizen phone. He demonstrated 60-frames-per-second 3D game, and received the applause of participants.
At the Summit, mobile carriers like KT, Orange and NTT Docomo said they need a new OS like Tizen to realize a mobile open ecosystem, and reconfirmed they will to support the Tizen camp.
"Tizen advocates true diversity and an open policy. I have a positive view of Tizen's future. It will give developers more benefits," explained Lee Eung-ho, director in charge of T&C Business Cooperation. "With concentration on iOS and Android continuing, the appearance of HTML 5-based Tizen will give developer more opportunities and a new environment, and contribute to invigoration of the mobile ecosystem."
The move of the Tizen alliance is parallel to the direction of the evolution of Google's Android. Android is expanding its territory beyond the mobile into TVs, automobiles and home appliances. In particular, Android 4.4 KitKat, which Google introduced recently, requires less resource than existing Android, and can be used on devices with lower hardware specifications. It coincides with the direction of Tizen 3.0 development. Tizen is making moves similar to those of Android. It is interpreted as an intention to pit Tizen against Android in all areas.
"We applied Tizen to cameras and automobiles. We are done preparing the launch of Tizen," said Choi Jong-deok, VP of Samsung Electronics. "I cannot disclose when the Tizen phone and Tizen TV will be released, but we are planning to unveil them soon, and you will see a truly open platform,"
