UK Gets Google, Microsoft to Step Up Online Child Porn Fight
Nov 18th 2013, 21:45, by Richard Adhikari

Both Google and Microsoft initially wrung their hands and said blocking child porn from search results couldn't be done, but both companies have caved to UK demands to do just that. How effective they will be in combating the problem is up in the air, but "when accused of aiding pedophilia they are certain to take action to limit the reputational damage," said Open Rights Group's Jim Killock.

Google and Microsoft have ramped up their efforts to fight online child porn following months of pressure by the office of UK Prime Minister James Cameron.

Among other things, the two have created a blacklist of search terms for which results will be blocked.

When Cameron asked Google and Microsoft to create such a system in July, the companies told him blocking search results could not and should not be done because it was "against the very principle of the Internet and search engines to block material."

If the search engines cannot deliver on their commitment to prevent successful searches for child abuse material online, Cameron said he would push legislation to enforce it.

What Google and Microsoft Are Doing

Microsoft has introduced stronger process and technology improvements for its Bing search engine and Yahoo searches that will prevent child sexual abuse content from showing up in image, video and text search results.

The company also will help design a new national image database for the UK that will use the company's PhotoDNA technology to identify and take down illegal images across the Web.

Microsoft and Google will work with various UK bodies to prevent sharing of child sexual abuse content through Torrent peer-to-peer file sharing technology.

Both companies will also prevent search engines from displaying search terms used by child abusers as part of an auto-complete response to a query.

Google has introduced algorithms that will block illegal content from 100,000 unique searches worldwide. It will display warning signs for the 13,000 online search terms most clearly linked to child abuse and provide links to UK charities offering help.

Further, Google has developed technology similar to Microsoft's PhotoDNA that will uniquely identify illegal child abuse videos and enable their removal. This will be offered to other Internet firms and child safety organizations next year.

Google also will send computer engineers to both the Internet Watch Foundation in the UK and the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The Child Porn Battle

"The sexual abuse of children ruins young lives," Google spokesperson Peter Barron told TechNewsWorld. "It's why we proactively remove these awful images from our services -- and report offenders to the authorities."

Still, "the [UK] government is right that our industry can do more," Barron added.

"Microsoft has a zero tolerance approach to child sexual abuse content," the company said in a statement provided to TechNewsWorld by Waggener Edstrom's Kimberly Lamberton. "Since the summer, we've been putting in place stronger processes that go even further in preventing access to child sexual abuse content across the Web, Internet search and torrents."

However, the announcements by Cameron, Microsoft and Google are more show than substance, according to Open Rights Group.

"It doesn't matter if the companies are at fault or can only make a limited difference, but when accused of aiding pedophilia they are certain to take action to limit the reputational damage," said Executive Director Jim Killock.

Preying On Our Young

Authorities broke up a 348-strong child porn ring in Canada, the U.S. and elsewhere, rescuing 386 kids, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt noted in an article published Sunday in the Daily Mail.

That ring was cracked following a joint three-year investigation into a Toronto-based film company by law enforcement in Eastern Europe, Toronto, and the U.S. postal Inspection Service.

One in eight of the endangered runaways reported to the NECMC in 2012 were likely sex trafficking victims, the agency said.

PhotoDNA Targets Child Porn

Microsoft developed PhotoDNA technology together with Dartmouth College back in 2009, and donated it to the NCMEC.

PhotoDNA lets users create what's effectively a "fingerprint" of a still photo that will remain consistent even after the photo is edited or manipulated. That lets users identify all copies of that photo anywhere.

Microsoft has rolled out PhotoDNA on Bing, SkyDrive and Hotmail together with the NCMEC, and Facebook sublicensed the technology in 2011.

Microsoft has also funded six research teams to study how technology facilitates the trafficking of minors, and teamed up with Swedish firm NetClean to offer PhotoDNA to law enforcement agencies at no cost.

Microchips May Haunt Tombstone Thieves
Nov 18th 2013, 23:07, by David Vranicar

Today in international news: A South African company creates microchips designed to thwart tombstone robberies; Google Earth is used to track deforestation; PlayStation 4 has some strong early sales; China blocks Reuters' Chinese website; and U.S. researchers create a record of images deleted from Chinese social media.

A private company in South Africa has created "Memorial Alert," a microchip-based technology designed to thwart tombstone robberies. There recently has been a spate of these crimes in Johannesburg.

The microchip is inserted into a memorial. When it is disturbed, it will sound an alarm and send a text message to relatives and integrated security companies.

Thieves reportedly are lifting an estimated 20 marble tombstones from cemeteries per month. They pawn them to stonemasons who recycle the materials, simultaneously staking their claim to a seat in the underworld.

PlayStation 4 Sees Strong Early Sales

A cool million units of the new PlayStation 4 console sold within 24 hours of going on sale in the U.S. and Canada, Sony reported.

The console was released in North America on Nov. 15, and will go on sale in Europe and Latin America in a couple weeks.

Sony is in a head-to-head grudge match with Microsoft and its new Xbox One console, which goes on sale Nov. 22. Sony apparently wants to sell 5 million PS4 units -- priced at US$399 a pop -- by the end of March.

Google Earth Used to Track Deforestation

A University of Maryland geographer has partnered with Google Earth to map the planet's forests and visualize global deforestation.

The geographer, Matthew Hansen, processed more than 600,000 images taken by NASA satellites over the past decade, creating a series of time-lapse maps and an interactive mapping tool.

While cool, the project is also sobering: Earth reportedly lost nearly 900,000 square miles of forest between 2000 and 2012 -- more or less the size of the U.S. east of the Mississippi.

It would have taken his computer 15 years to compile the images, Hansen said, so Google gets at least a hat-tip for the effort.

China Now Blocking Reuters

The powers that be in China are now blocking domestic access to Reuters' Chinese website.

Beijing apparently was ticked off by an article discussing JPMorgan Chase's link to the daughter of former Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.

The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times also have had their websites blocked in China.

The website that first discovered the Reuters blockade, GreatFire.org, which tracks China's so-called Great Firewall, is offering a mirror site for Reuters China. GreatFire claims that its mirror site can be accessed without any of the circumvention tools -- proxy servers, VPNs and the like -- that are needed to access other forbidden content in China.

GreatFire created the mirror site by using "a subpath of Amazon and Google's domains that support HTTPS access," according to The Next Web. Therefore, in order to block the mirror site, Beijing would apparently have to block entire domains -- and, in the process, take down potentially thousands of other sites.

Database for Censored Photos

In other Chinese censorship news, U.S.-based investigative journalism outfit ProPublica set out to create a database of images deleted from Sina Weibo, a Twitter-esque -- but heavily censored -- social media platform in China.

Teaming with the University of Hong Kong, ProPublica created software that stores posts from a group of 100 users. Said users had had material removed in the past, and most had a significant number of followers.

The study, carried out over two weeks, revealed that the 100 users had a total of 527 images removed. The images included shots of a yawning politician, archive images from the Korean War, shamed former Communist Party big wig Bo Xilai, human rights advocates, and long passages of text.

Android 4.3 update for AT&T Galaxy S4 reportedly pulled because of unmentioned issues
Nov 18th 2013, 18:47, by Maximus

Well, things don't seem to be going too well for Samsung's Android 4.3 updates for various devices. After the Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy S III was put on hold because of major issues, it looks like AT&T might have done the same for the 4.3 update for the Galaxy S4. According to Android Police, the update has been pulled and AT&T is currently investigating some unmentioned issues, and is looking with "potential improvements" with Samsung.

There's no telling when the update's rollout resume, and it makes us wonder what could be going on with the update. Has Samsung's huge amount of add-on features become too much for the company to handle and is causing issues when adapting Android 4.3 to older devices, or did they start pushing out the updates prematurely without testing them properly? Whatever the reasons may be, here's hoping Samsung gets everything fixed as soon as possible, instead of making users suffer by giving them half-baked updates.

Have any of you using an AT&T Galaxy S4 witnessed any major bugs or issues after the Android 4.3 update?

Samsung delivers official statement regarding Galaxy S3′s Android 4.3 update issues
Nov 18th 2013, 18:47, by Maximus

Two weeks ago, Samsung finally released the much awaited Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy S III, but immediately after updating the device to Android 4.3 users started to complain about various bugs they were encountering. We ourselves tested the Android 4.3 update extensively and came to the conclusion that Samsung might have rushed with the new update just so that they could bring in GALAXY Gear's support to the Galaxy S III. Samsung KNOX was also not implemented in the software update, even though Samsung promised that it will introduce KNOX with the Android 4.3 update.

Major issues in new Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S III:-
- Wake up lag (Sometimes it takes a few seconds to wake the device from standby and sometimes a few minutes)
- Random Freezing
- Huge battery drain
- Bluetooth Audio issues during playback in car
- Stuttering music playback with stock Samsung music app
- Device freezes as soon a call is received (Black screen issue)
- Poor RAM management (very difficult to multitask)
- Wi-Fi issues

After receiving so many complaints about the new Android 4.3 software update, we contacted Samsung Mobile UK for an official statement on the matter, check the statement below.

"As we are currently investigating the reported issues with Galaxy S3 4.3 Jelly Bean update, the upgrading service has been temporarily suspended. We are committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience, and will ensure to resume the upgrading service at the earliest possibility." – Samsung Mobile UK

According to the statement, Samsung has temporarily suspended the upgrade service and the Android 4.3 update (I9300XXUGMG9) has been pulled from FOTA and Samsung KIES. So you won't be able to update your Galaxy S3 to Android 4.3 at the moment.

Galaxy S3 users were waiting for this update for a long time now as the device was still running a year old version of Android (4.1.2), Samsung never updated the device to Android 4.2. We think Samsung should have taken some more time and iron out all the bugs before actually rolling out the firmware upgrade as it has made a lot of its customers very unhappy. We will let you folks know as soon as Samsung resumes the upgrade service again.

Samsung is working on portable fitness accessory Samsung Sports
Nov 18th 2013, 18:49, by Maximus

Samsung announced earlier this year its first portable accessory, the Galaxy Gear smart watch , which in combination with for example the Galaxy Note 3 can display notifications on the screen of the smart watch. However, it was nevertheless particularly that the smart watch would have a large number of fitness functions, in practice proved what else to lie, this still because apart from a pedometer is on fitness area not much interesting to find on the Galaxy Gear . A new product from Samsung can ever change going to bring here, because the brand names database of the USPTOis one reference found to the Samsung Sports accessory for smartphones and tablets.
Screenshot 2013-11-17 at 12:03:54

The application shows that it is portable accessory, various body monitored, such as heart rate, blood pressure and the number of calories burned. Furthermore, it seems the Samsung Sports also possible to gather information about sleep patterns and will be able to see how fast you run, how many steps you've walked and what the weather is outside.

In our view, the Samsung Sports also seems to be accompanied by the Nike + FuelBand which offers similar functionality. Battle When the Samsung Sports comes on the market is just like the price at present unclear.

AT&T Temporarily Pulls Android 4.3 Update For Samsung Galaxy S4
Nov 18th 2013, 18:48, by Maximus

Remember that Android 4.3 update that started rolling out to the AT&T Galaxy S4 last week? Well, you can stop waiting for it and hitting the update button every 10 minutes – there's been a little hiccup.
nexusae0_Screenshot_2013-12-13-22-22-43_1_

After hearing some reports, we were able to confirm that AT&T has indeed pulled the update while they investigate some issues. There is no word on when it will start rolling out again, or what the exact issues was with the last update. We were told the update was on hold so Samsung and AT&T could look into "potential improvements."

This update was supposed to include Galaxy Gear support, but it looks like the Note 3 will be the only device on AT&T with support for Samsung's smart watch for a bit longer. So if you haven't received the update yet, you probably won't be getting it for a while yet.

Samsung working on portable fitness accessory called the Samsung Sport
Nov 18th 2013, 18:49, by Maximus

The Galaxy S4 was the first Samsung device that had a focus on health-related features, and the Galaxy Gear also comes with a pedometer to help users track various physical parameters. It was rumored that the company isworking on numerous wearable devices, and it looks like a portable fitness accessory could be one of them – Samsung has applied to the USPTO to trademark the brand name Samsung Sport, and the description mentions functionality such as monitoring parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, steps taken, the amount of calories burned, and more.
The Samsung Sport will also be able to measure, collect, and track data about sleep patterns, similar to Nike's FuelBand SE, a popular fitness accessory for iOS that Samsung's Sport will go up against, but hopefully with the option to pair with many more devices than is possible with the FuelBand. As always, a trademark application doesn't necessarily mean we'll see an actual product, but for those fitness freaks out there, the Samsung Sport might be something to look out for.

Apple gets another chance to ban Samsung products in the US
Nov 18th 2013, 18:50, by Maximus

Ready for another bout between Apple and Samsung? The latest development comes from the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit where the court affirms injunction denial for design patents but Apple can try again with the technical utility patents. Last time Apple had to prove the patented feature as the "sole" reason for driving sales of the products but this time Apple will have to show "some connection between the patented feature and demand for Samsung's products".

If the evidence proves "the inclusion of a patented features makes a product significantly more desirable", the injunction could be very well on the cards against Samsung products.

You can read the detailed appeal document at the source link below.

MegaFon built the 100G DREAM network using Huawei WDM technology
Nov 18th 2013, 18:30, by Maximus

MegaFon, Russia's leading communications service provider, and Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, jointly announced today that the operator has built Phase I of 100G WDM Eurasia intercontinental high-speed backbone network using Huawei WDM technology, which is known as the Diverse Route for European and Asian Markets (DREAM) project. The end-to-end length of the route is about 8,700 km from Frankfurt-am-Main to the Kazakhstan-China border. This network employs some of the world's leading technologies, like 100G coherent SD-FEC line cards, hybrid amplifiers and OTN to provide the shortest, most secure and advanced high-speed information road between Asia and Europe.

According to forecast, there will be an annual traffic growth of over 50% between Asia and Europe. To address such huge demands, MegaFon built a new network connecting Europe and Asia with the shortest and reliable network to ensure low service delay and high user service reliability.

Transit system DREAM is designed to transport all types of telecommunication traffic between Europe and Asia. In Phase I of the project MegaFon is ready to provide its foreign partners with reliable DWDM communication channels at speeds up to 10 Gb/s. The full system capacity is up to 8 Tb/s.

This project will allow MegaFon's business partners to get a competitive advantage for its customers: financial corporations, online traders and internet companies will be able to respond more quickly to the changing situation on the market, thanks to the unique route of DREAM.

In this project Huawei advanced 100G SD-FEC technology provides ultra long-haul signal transmission, and its OTN technology enables flexible service access and grooming. On the one hand, these two technologies allow the network to deliver huge bandwidth to users within a short period of time, and, on the other hand, enhance MegaFon's long-haul service provisioning capability, enabling MegaFon to better serve global users.

"Every year the volume of traffic sent from Europe to Asia, along with the demand for the capacity of communication channels, is steadily growing. Therefore, we view this project as both significant and promising for MegaFon's business", said MegaFon CEO, Ivan Tavrin.

"MegaFon is building a silk road of information. This road will play a significant role in enhancing economic cooperation and human communication between Asia and Europe", said Wan Biao, CEO of Huawei Russia.

CHARGE TOTALLY WIRELESSLY WITH THE NEW DC-50
Nov 18th 2013, 18:34, by Maximus

Designed to be the most flexible and effortless charger, the DC-50 can be popped in your pocket or bag and put into action at a moment's notice, without the need to plug it in to either your phone, or a wall socket.

Measuring 134 x 69mm and weighing only 150g, it's ideal for giving your phone an extra boost when you're out and about.

Simply place the beautifully designed DC-50 onto a surface and position your Qi-enabled Nokia Lumia on top. Within seconds your Lumia will spring to life and begin charging as if by magic.

Nokia_DC_50_wireless-charging-group

The DC-50 is unmistakably Nokia, thanks to the high-grade polycarbonate and the same bold and vibrant cyan, red, white an yellow colours that we're now all familiar with. These colours will match your Lumia perfectly.

While this new wireless charger is, well, wireless, it means that you'll need to keep the DC-50 charged up and you can do that in one of two ways.

With a Micro-USB port you can plug it in just as you would a conventional phone. Alternatively, this new charging plate also has the ability to charge wirelessly. Just lay the plate on another wireless charger to fill it up.

To check how much battery life is left on the DC-50 there's a handy power indicator button that will light up an LED indicator when pressed.

The DC-50 will charge any Qi-enabled smartphone, such as the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 1520 and is available now in Europe, followed by other markets in early 2014, with an estimated price of around EUR 89.

What do you think of the new Nokia Portable Wireless Charging Plate? Let us know, below.
