Slick design and features with wow factor, available only from Motorola

Motorola Mobility, Inc. returns to Panamá with an innovative product created for all kinds of users. Among the products that the company will present in the country during next months, Motorola RAZR, a smartphone that will definitely make heads turn is one of the main bets of the company. Motorola RAZR will be available in Panamá through main carriers starting next week.

"We are confident that Motorola Mobility will surprise the Panamanian market, accomplishing an important place in the national consumer's minds," said Alfonso Cleaves Gutiérrez, commercial director, Motorola Mobility Central America."We are focused on developing and leading the convergence of mobile devices to make everyday life easier through the use of cell phones, tablets and other devices. We have a great challenge ahead of us and we want to successfully accomplish it."

Motorola RAZR, thin and powerful

Impossibly thin at 7.1 millimeters with an attractive design, Motorola RAZR captivates with its look and premium materials. Its sculpted glass face, diamond-cut aluminum accents and hyper-vibrant 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display reflect museum-worthy design, while its KEVLAR® fiber coating, scratch-resistantCorning® Gorilla® Glass screen, and splash-guard coating make this work of art a force to be reckoned with.

While they're still dazzled by the outside, hit them with what's on the inside. A cool 1GB of RAM hooks up with a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and Android™ 2.3.5 to get you a lightning-fast user interface and the power to multi-task like never before. Rock your playlists while you check your email, breeze through photos— all at the same time without delay. In addition, Motorola RAZR comes preloaded with the Motorola MotoCast™ app1, giving you the power to stream or download content from your computer straight to your device so your personal library is always within reach.

Watch movies on a screen that sports a wider range of colors than most LCD HDTVs. And when you're tired of watching (as if), use the cinematic-quality front-facing 720p HD video camera and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with even sharper 1080p HD video capture to create your own movies —all with image-stabilization technology to turn your life into art without breaking a swea.

"The original Motorola RAZR managed to turn a functional need into an object of desire. Now we've done it again by creating the next impossibly thin smartphone – a head-turning design with the power to carry your life with you," says Gutiérrez.

Close to Home, Wherever You Go

Your favorite music playlists and pics of every vacation. With Motorola RAZR it's all at your fingertips, all the time. With the free preloaded MotoCast app, you can stream content from your home or work computer straight to your pocket (or purse) so your personal content is always within reach. Whether you're across the street or across the country, you can rock your playlists or breeze through photos instantly – without hogging your device's memory. And, because you don't have to upload to a third-party site, you're saving time while your files stay safe because they stay with you.

Life Has Never Looked Better

"Super AMOLED Advanced display technology." It sounds futuristic because it is. Whether you stream or download your movies, hyper-vibrant colors make watching flicks on-the-go just as thrilling as watching at home on your HDTV. And zero motion-blur keeps the action smooth, so you can focus on the story, not the screen. Capture the excitement of your own life with the 8-megapixel rear camera and 1080p HD video recording, or chat with a friend using the front-facing HD video camera. No need for clunky, expensive camera equipment.

Work Smart, Not Hard

Government-grade encryption protects your email, contacts and calendar so you are business ready. Even your strict IT manager will be impressed. Work smart with Smart Actions – a preloaded app on Motorola RAZR that let you automate everyday tasks and enable better battery life. Smart Actions can turn down the ringer when you step into work, change the Bluetooth® and GPS settings when you get home to save battery, or send a text to someone if you miss their call – letting you focus more on what's actually important.

Accessories that Give Life to a Fully Unknown World

We feature all the tools and accessories needed to turn the world's most enchanting smartphone into a cloud-based mobile computing station, an HD media hub, a browser, and a spectacular stereo sound system. Combined with one of Motorola's incredible accessories, you can unleash a world of endless possibilities.

Use the new Motorola Lapdock™ 100 to let loose Motorola's revolutionary webtop application, giving you the power to edit documents and browse the Web with a full Firefox browser – all while powering the device. Or, plug it into the HD Dock or HD Station to connect to your HDTV, speakers and other peripherals for large-screen entertainment.

You can also connect a navigation dock for GPS and directions, battery pack for extra life, Bluetooth keyboard for efficient typing. Control your content and your calls, play basic games and browse the web from the comfort of your couch with the Smart Controller. You'll have the brains, brawn and beauty to make the impossible possible.

Galaxy S III teased on Samsung Denmark Facebook page

By now we've heard plenty of rumored details, though nothing confirmed, about what Samsung's going to be showing off on May 3 in London. And today the plot thickens somewhat with the unveiling of a new teaser image on an official Facebook page. The manufacturer's uploaded the image you see above to its Danish Facebook gallery, showing the date and time (in Denmark) of the Galaxy S III new Galaxy launch event. Over on the right is the unmistakable outline of a curved smartphone, similar to the Galaxy Nexus. The profile of the device is different to what we've seen in recent leaked images, suggesting those units may indeed have been Galaxy S III hardware in generic dummy cases, as has been reported.

No clues as to what, if anything, that plus sigh is all about. But if you have any wild theories, be sure to shout out in the comments.

It's coming, folks. And we've no doubt the next couple of weeks will be packed with more rumors and speculation (and maybe a fresh leak or two), as we await Samsung's next big thing. Keep watching AC for all the latest.

Samsung to also announce a new Galaxy Tab at London event?

If the launch of the unnamed Galaxy phone isn't of any interest to you (we seriously doubt that), then you may be excited to hear that Samsung may also be launching a new tablet.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the Korean chaebol will be lining up a new 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab to complement the handset launch.

The tablet will apparently be running a dual-core processor, and will not be the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (that is supposedly getting a quad-core upgrade).

It seems strange for Samsung to launch yet another tablet--a focused product lineup may be a better idea for the company instead of making so many slates. A Samsung spokesperson had previously admitted that the company wasn't "doing very well in the tablet market".

We checked with Samsung, who told us that nothing has been heard about a tablet launching in London.

Will the Korean company really be launching another tablet? We'll be at London for the launch to bring you the news straight from the source, so stay tuned.

A little firm but gentle pressure on the base of the polycarbonate unibody snaps it away from the edge of the screen. Don't want to risk damage so I'm not going any further just yet.

Full disclosure required for app users in California

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

If you've developed a mobile app, there's a good chance that you've got at least one user that's from Silicon Valley or California, which might not seem like a big deal. But if you're also collecting user data, it can be a big deal because of an existing, but little known state law, called the California Online Privacy Protection Act.  According to this law, if a mobile app collects any personal data from a California resident, the app must provide a security policy for users. Read on to understand more about this law, to learn about what data you should collect, and to get hints for keeping user data secure.
As the use of mobile apps becomes a daily part of life, more attention is being paid to how apps collect and use personal data. While some governments have yet to pass laws that require developers to fully disclose when apps collect and transmit data, the State of California has already taken steps to protect app users and will be working with a number of major tech companies to strengthen privacy protection for global app consumers. According to their recent announcement, six of the leading mobile application platforms (including Google) signed an agreement to foster innovation in privacy protection, promote transparency, and facilitate compliance with mobile privacy laws, including the California Online Privacy Protection Act (OPPA).
California mobile app privacy laws
Along with OPPA, mobile app users in California are further protected under California's Unfair Competition Law or False Advertising Law. Under these regulations, any app that collect personal data from a California resident is required to have a privacy policy that states what information is collected and what that information is used for.  Any app that doesn't adhere to these standards is subject to prosecution. The act has a very broad scope, so whether you're a developer based out of Korea, Sweden, or Israel, as long as you have someone accessing your app in California, the same rules apply to you. A California resident can simply file a complaint with the Attorney General or take personal legal action through a private attorney.
Only collect the user data that you need
Assuming that you've informed your app users and have their permission, what kind of information should you collect? It should be just the basics, and even then, only the information that you really need. If you have a GPS or navigation-based app, of course it makes sense that you'll need to location details, but it's not necessary to have access to users' contacts list. And if you've developed something as basic as a flashlight app, you probably don't need to collect any information at all.
Protect collected and transmitted user data!
If it's absolutely necessary to collect and transmit data, you need to ensure that the collected data is handled safely. Employ proper file permissions. Encrypt the locally stored data before sending it to the server to help protect the user's confidential information. When communicating with a server over HTTP, avoid encoding user information in a URL that is used with HTTP. Instead, post it in a message body. Putting information in the URL increased the chances that it will be automatically logged.

Android Developers Blog – Best practices for handling Android user data.

More best practices for handling Android user data
We also would like to share some valuable hints on how to manage Android user data from Nick Kralevich, an engineer with the Android Security Team. In his article, Nick provides several key points to consider when developing your Android applications:
Maintain a privacy policy – Trustworthy applications are up-front about the data they collect and the reasons for collecting it. Users are generally happy to share information via such apps if they believe they will personally benefit. A clear and concise privacy policy, with details about the type of information collected and how it's used, goes a long way towards generating trust and good will.
Minimise permissions – Android is unique among mobile operating systems for its simple, straightforward, operating-system-enforced permission model. All Android applications must declare the permissions they require, and users must approve these permissions before the application is installed. Users tend to distrust applications that require excessive permissions.
Give your users a choice regarding data collection – Users are often happy to share their information, but they want control over that sharing. Trustworthy applications give users control over their information. For example, the Android Browser has privacy settings which enable users to control how their information is shared.
Don't collect unnecessary information – Trustworthy applications limit the kinds of data they collect. Collecting unnecessary information, especially if you never use it, just invites suspicion. When in doubt, don't collect it.
Don't send data off the device – If you have to handle user data, ensure that the data remains on the device whenever possible. Users are comforted knowing that their private information strictly resides in the phone. Sending data outside the phone, even if done for the user's benefit, tends to draw suspicion.
… but if you have to, use encryption and data minimization – Sometimes, the collection of data is necessary. In that case, applications need to ensure that it is handled safely. A privacy policy will avoid leading to surprised and irritated users; in some cases, it may be advisable to prompt the user before transmitting data off-device.
Don't use code you don't understand – In the open-source Android environment, it's common (and good) practice to rely heavily on other people's code, in the form of libraries and frameworks. But if that code is handling your users' information inappropriately, it's your problem. So make a point of checking code before you rely on it.
Don't log device or user specific information – Application developers should be careful about on-device logs. Android makes it easy to write to the phone's log, and anyone who has looked at "logcat" output knows that it is full of important but seemingly random debugging information from many applications. In Android, logs are a shared resource, and are available to an application with the READ_LOGS permission (only with user consent, of course!). Even though the phone log data is temporary and erased on reboot, inappropriate logging of user information could inadvertently leak user data to other applications.
***
When you create a mobile app, it's usually with the best intentions for your users – you want them to enjoy your game, save some time or money with a handy app, and spread its popularity among friends. At the same time, your users are putting their trust in your app by agreeing to your apps permissions, which includes disclosing personal data. Though you might not have any app users in California, it's still best practice to your let your users know if you are collecting any information. Keep that trustworthiness going by ensuring your app only collects that data it needs, and make sure you keep that user data secure – your users will truly appreciate it!
App developers and tech enthusiasts, so what do you say? Will you take any extra efforts because of these laws? Are you considering privacy issues while downloading new apps? Make your voice heard!

The Nokia Lumia 900 is a speed demon with amazing LTE

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

The Nokia Lumia 900 is a very fast phone, for two good reasons.  First of all, the Lumia 900 is super powered from a hardware perspective and Windows Phone is a zippy operating system that simply flows from app to app.
Also, because the Lumia 900 utilizes the uber-fast AT&T LTE network in the United States, Lumia 900 owners don't have to wait when it comes to accessing their favorite web based applications and services. Whether it's sending off huge emails with attachments or conducting a video conference from your phone, LTE will make you a happy web surfer.

For those who don't know the skinny on LTE, the acronym stands for Long Term Evolution. In essence, LTE is the next generation of wireless data networks that will replace or augment existing HSPA networks here in the United States in the AT&T network.

LTE networks offer consumers a huge advantage because LTE delivers amazing network download speeds (capable of up to 75Mbps down) that are even way faster than your home-based broadband connection. In my experience on AT&T's LTE network in Austin and Indianapolis, I routinely achieve download speeds of 18Mbps and upload speeds of around 5Mbps, which is stellar for a wireless data connection and much faster than I can achieve in a normal 3G network connection.

Apps to maximize LTE

What might consumers utilize LTE for?  With such a fast, responsive network, the first app that comes to mind is Tango for video chats. Utilizing the wide angle front facing camera and LTE, video calls on Tango feature high quality video with no latency.

For an alternative to Tango, I utilized the Skype Beta for Windows Phone client to call long-time friend Matt Miller, of ZDNet, and we tested our Lumia 900s to conduct a 5 minute video call. The quality was great!

To further utilize the LTE work, I have been using SkyDrive to work with large files that would regularly be email attachments with my co-workers. No matter whether the file is a huge spreadsheet or a large PDF, downloading and working with the file is easy because of the Lumia 900′s huge screen and LTE speeds.

What speeds are you getting?

It's time to weigh in, dear readers. What speeds are you achieving on your Lumia 900?  To test your mobile throughput in your location, I suggest utilizing Bandwidth, a free app available in the Marketplace.

The United States is full of sports nuts. Some of us love football (the kind with the oval shaped ball), others are into basketball – but almost everyone has a sport they follow on a regular basis.
One group of sports fans that are really passionate are those who follow college sports. As fans, we want to know what's going on with our team and our players. Likely the most competitive college conference, the Southeastern Conference, just received a new app in the Windows Marketplace.

The Official SEC Mobile App was built in partnership between Nokia and XOS Digital, a sports video technology company. The app gives SEC fans access to original video content, SEC team schedules for all conference sports and live scores, stats, standing and detailed rosters for games while in session.

I, for one, am a huge consumer of sports apps, especially those that show me what matches are going on over the weekend, and I love checking scores on my mobile on Saturday football gamedays in the Fall.

The Official SEC app is perfect for fans of the conference because of its amazing video content that can be watched over an LTE, 3G or Wi-Fi.

College sports fans around the US will be happy to know that new apps are coming out for other conferences including the BIG EAST conference, Mid-American Conference, West Coast Conference and Conference USA.

Nokia Egypt reaches one million Facebook fans

Social media channels are a key means for Nokia to form a connection with customers and others interested in the company and its products. That doesn't just mean this blog, of course. Different people like to find out Nokia news in different ways. For some, full-length blog posts are key; for others, 140 characters is just enough. Facebook lies somewhere in the middle and for many it provides the right balance between depth and brevity.
But it's not just the global Facebook page that's important. Many countries run their own pages. And today we're especially proud of the efforts of our team in Egypt, where the local Nokia team has managed to attract one million Facebook fans. That figure is even more impressive when you consider that there are only 10 million active Facebook users in the country.

These are some truly staggering figures. What was the secret to the Nokia Egypt team's success? We spoke to Omar Rostom, Digital Marketing Manager at Nokia North Africa, to find out how he and his team achieved such a feat.

Hitting the magic one million mark

"It feels awesome!" Is the first thing Omar Rostom says when we begin talking about his team hitting the magic million mark on Facebook. It's easy to see why: "We are now the third biggest page in Egypt and plan to be the biggest in the very near future. We also have the highest consistent engagement rate as a brand in Egypt."

This was no overnight success, however. It took over a year and a half of hard work to hit one million Facebook fans – and things only got tougher as that milestone drew nearer.

"The bigger you become as a page, the harder it is to keep your fans engaged," reveals Omar. "The key is to always keep your content appealing and not be afraid to try something new."

Fresh content, efficiently employed

So what kind of new content pushed Nokia Egypt over the line? "We had some really great local content behind the QWERTY Campaign [a typing contest for Nokia Asha owners] and 3D Projection in Egypt, which drove interest in our page," says Omar. "During these two campaigns, we managed to increase our fan base by over 200,000 fans in just two months."

"Facebook pages are fundamentally about building communities," Omar continues.  "Our focus has always been to add value to people's lives by engaging, educating, and interacting with them on our page."

A country in transition

Hitting such a milestone is all the more remarkable when you consider the massive upheaval experienced by Egyptians over the past year. The Nokia Egypt team was aware they had to be sensitive to this throughout.

"Egypt is currently a country in transition on all fronts; socially, technologically, and politically to name a few," Omar says. "We faced a lot of challenges in engaging with our fans because of this, but we made sure we were quick to adapt and understand the changes that the country was going through." He adds: "We ensured that we reflected this understanding in our posts."

Indeed, it's through Facebook that Egypt's youth are finding their voice. "Since the January 25 revolution," Omar explains, "it [Facebook] has become a key touchpoint for youths. It's where they voice their opinions, connect with friends and family, play games, share jokes, and engage with brands."

The result is that Egypt currently has one of the fastest Facebook growth rates in the world. "On average it grows at a rate of around 15 per cent every three months," says Omar.

Congratulations all, and here's to the next million!

HTC: No plans for any more QWERTY keyboards

RIP QWERTY

HTC may well have manufactured its last ever QWERTY keyboard phone after admitting it has no plans to revisit the form factor.

Pocket-lint attended the Frequencies event in Seattle where HTC's design team spoke candidly about moving away from phones with physical keyboards, with emphasis very much being on touchscreens.

As one of the pioneers for Android – an operating system that works far better with a larger screen - HTC has predominantly concentrated on touchscreen phones.

However, only last year we saw the HTC ChaCha, a QWERTY keyboard sporting handset.

Yet even one button access to Facebook wasn't enough to convince consumers and the HTC ChaCha subsequently received a lukewarm reception.

Whether it was the ChaCha's underperformance that has caused HTC to reevaluate its road plan it's hard to say, but Pocket-lint for one still feels there is a place for HTC QWERTY phones.

Let's hope it's more a sabbatical rather than a retirement.

Thanks to http://shop.htcpedia.com for providing the HTC One X for a drop test.

In this test you will see me drop the HTC One X three times. Once on its back from waist height then the same way from shoulder height. The next thing that I did was chest high face down to get a full shot on the Gorilla Glass.

After the first two drops you will notice the shell of the HTC One X can really take a beating only showing minor scratches and dings, except for the scratch that we noticed going across the camera lens.

The difference between the HTC One X drop test and other drop tests, is that there is no removable battery that will pop out when you drop it. Just watch the video and you will see what happens..

For more info about HTC One X tests visit http://htcpedia.com/tags/1551.html

Boot to Gecko: Brazil will be the first market for open source mobile

Brazil will be the first country to have phones running the open source platform Boot To Gecko, based on HTML 5, in the world. The announcement was made today in Sao Paulo by the Mozilla Digital and Telefonica, and the first devices will be launched between the end of this year and early 2013.

The two companies announced today a partnership to develop applications that HTML 5 will run natively on the phone, resuming the conversation that began in February during the Mobile World Congress. The idea, according to Gary Kovacs, CEO of Mozilla, "is making the web available to all users in their pockets."

Boot to Gecko, the Mozilla project codenamed, will be the basis for the platform used in phones (called Open Web Devices) HTML5 applications that will run natively. In practice, it is a lightweight and fast operating system based on the web that gives basic appliances (featurephones) smartphone features - mantra repeated by Kovacs (below) several times.

"It's an open platform to allow complete control of applications, much like a browser, and applications are installed the way you expect. The difference is that they are created with web standards, and we will have links and clicks between apps, something that already happens on the web today, but not in the applications closed platforms, "says Kovacs.

The video shows a demo of Boot to Gecko running on a prototype :

With Brazil being the first market, both Telefonica Digital (business division of Telefónica) and Mozilla still does not say which manufacturers will launch products with the platform.

Asked whether the initiative would be a form of the operators (in the case, Vivo and its 90 million customers) regain control of the apparatus of the hands of manufacturers, Kovacs was blunt: "Well, operators are very large companies, no?".

Pablo Larrieux, chief innovation officer of Telefonica Vivo, said that "expects the first devices with Boot Gecko to be sold by price featurephones today" and that, being an open platform, "to be sold unlocked, because of Brazilian laws ". Vivo said that the partnership is a way for the operator to anticipate customer demand for appliances "open innovation", as with other platforms.

Seeing the demo video and listening to the project concept, I remembered the late WebOS, Palm - which had the same idea to run web apps. In Vivo / Telefonica, is good business: it supports the development of an open platform and escapes the constraints of market smartphone manufacturers (hi, Apple!). If the project get to the real world later this year or early 2013, Vivo will surely offer very low prices to increase the use of mobile internet (remember that it is an internet company now).

Nagano comments: This project also reminds me of the Chromebook - indeed, even surprising to me that this notion that " the computer is the network "- (copyright 1996 ~ 2000 Larry Ellison / Oracle) has not been further explored by the market, Himself as Google demonstrated its feasibility with products like GMail, Google Maps, Google docs, etc.. Otherwise, this platform offers a great business model for operators, since they can charge on the data traffic, which sounds like music to your ears.

What will they really need is a Killer App that will convince people to abandon the current model of mobile computing mezza-online/mezza-offline and go to an entirely online.

Still time:

In the documentary " Triumph of the Nerds "there is a stretch where Larry Elisson confesses all his hatred of the PCs at the same time defending their idea of what we now call cloud computing (and that there in 1996!)
