5 tech blockbusters that changed movies forever
Dec 31st 2012, 20:45

If there's one industry that mirrors mobile tech when it comes to ingenuity it's the movie business. Just look at The Hobbit now blazing a trail in cinemas around the world. It's the first film to make use of the TS-5, a two-camera system that behaves like a single camera for better 3D. While this revolutionary tech is stunning to the eyes,The Hobbit is far from the first blockbuster to dramatically change the way movies are made.

Star Wars (1977)

Heard of an animated 3D wireframe graphic? You would have seen it for the first time during the trench run briefing scene in the first Star Wars film. It had been formulated by Larry Cuba working at the Circle Graphics Habitat – later the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) – at Illinois University. Ridley Scott would later use the same technology in Alien, when the ship flies over the alien planet. Star Wars was also the first to use Dolby Stereo – so the Force really was with you.

Tron (1982)

OK it wasn't technically a blockbuster at the time but it was the first extensive use of 3D. The 3D cycle race was a neon wonder. Triple-III, who had pioneered CG in Westworld, were also on board. Pre-internet – computer animation was outsourced to a number of different companies. Polaroids of progress were posted to director Steve Lisberger, who admitted that '…the biggest computer we had on the whole movie was 256K……you have more computing power on your cell phone than we had on the whole first movie.' Still looked fab though!

Jurassic Park (1993)

It's hard to imagine that first reveal – dinosaurs that looked as if they might step out from the screen. It was a brave advance demanded by director Steven Spielberg – the first physically textured CGI. Film crew also used stop-motion miniatures and animatronics. The whole enterprise would succeed or fail on the power of digital characters – another first. In an astonishing twist, Ray Harryhausen, the genius of stop-frame animation, was visiting the studios at the time. He was shown some footage of the dinosaurs and exclaimed 'Now there's the future!'

Toy Story (1995)

Only 27 animators worked on this Disney/Pixar production, the first full 3D animation. Disney had been an innovator, but computer-generated animation fast replaced the traditional hand-inked method. Experiments in 3D – in Beauty and the Beast's ballroom scene and the Wildebeest stampede in The Lion King – excited a whole industry. A palette of thousands of colours could be used. Toy Story's technical director Bill Reeves proudly said 'We were essentially kick-starting an industry in terms of CG films.' Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of Dreamworks (later, Dreamworks Animation) would later say that 'more is never enough.'

The Matrix (1999)

Call it time-slice or bullet-time – there are a number of other special effect names – it was used first in the super cool The Matrix. Green screen technology, lasers and high-speed full-motion cameras – where the action slows down or freezes as the camera seems to circle 360 degrees around the characters. Actors are placed on wires, with wires erased in post-production. It wasn't completely about the special effects –actors still had to do over a year of martial arts training, as well as having a zen-like reading list.

Of course films are now astonishingly tech-savvy and keep making amazing advances – but will we ever again have that child-like 'wow' feeling that these films gave us at the time? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Nokia's smartphones of 2012
Dec 31st 2012, 20:47

How many smartphones do you think Nokia unveiled this year? I've been taking a look back at the last 12 months and I'm amazed at how busy they've been!
The year started with a bang – most people still had their Christmas decorations up when the Nokia Lumia 900 was unveiled in early January.
Such was the excitement around this device that there was even a concert in Times Square with Nicki Minaj to announce its arrival in the USA.
The Lumia 900's reputation was also given a hammering (but in a good way) when a video emerged of someone trying to put some nails through its screen. Not just a great smartphone, but a tough one too.
Two other Lumia 900 highlights on Nokia Conversations was an interview with designer Stefan Pannenbecker and a look at how engineers gave the Lumia 900 its terrific audio performance.

How many megapixels!?

If it's February then it must be the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. In 2012, Nokia announced a couple of smartphones in the Spanish city.

The Nokia Lumia 610 gave teenagers on a budget the chance to get the full Windows Phone experience with social networking, music, Web browsing, gaming and apps.
However, the star of the show was undoubtedly the Nokia 808 PureView with its revolutionary imaging technology and headline-grabbing 41-megapixel sensor.
This amazing device picked up awards throughout the year and critics were quick to herald a new camera phone revolution.
It was so good that many people (not just me) were comparing it favourably with compact digital cameras and one man even set up awebsite devoted to it.

It wouldn't be the last time we heard about PureView technology in 2012.

A new generation

Another highlight of the year was the unveiling in early September of Nokia's first Windows Phone 8 devices in New York.
The Nokia Lumia 920 came with a raft of technological innovations and its gorgeous industrial design quickly won a host of admirers.
As well as wireless charging, the Lumia 920 introduced everyone to PureMotion HD+, which meant it had the fastest and mostsensitive smartphone touchscreen coupled with good sunlight readability.
Not to mention, of course, the latest evolution of PureView technology with its low-light capability and optical image stabilisation.
The Nokia Lumia 820 also featured wireless charging, with the help of its exchangeable wireless charging shells, and in my humble opinion was the best looking phone of 2012.
A lot of the credit for that must go to Nicola Ralston and her team at Nokia's Colour and Material Design Team. She told Conversations about their design approach to these stunning smartphones.
The following months saw several variants of the Lumia 820 launching in the USA, such as the Lumia 810 and Lumia 822. They were all similar and yet somehow different, but still, essentially, fantastic smartphones.

Lumia for the masses

The end of October saw the launch of Nokia's most affordable Lumia yet – the Lumia 510.

Nokia_Lumia_510

This entry-level smartphone still packed in plenty of features despite its great low price. It sported a 4-inch display, 5-megapixel autofocus camera and came in five eye-catching colours: red, yellow, cyan, white and black.

This was quickly followed by the Nokia Lumia 620, which like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, was powered by Windows Phone 8.

The Lumia 620 also has exchangeable shells, and is made with a 'Dual Shot' technique, which gives its body a unique depth and translucency to its colour – of which there is a variety to choose from.

It is already becoming apparent that the Lumia 620 will be appealing to a wide spectrum of people – from teenagers all the way tobusiness professionals.

By my count, that's over half a dozen smartphones in the space of a year. I'm hoping that 2013 will be just as busy!

Juha Alakarhu: My Windows Phone 8 Start screen
Dec 31st 2012, 20:46

Juha Alakarhu is one of the crack team that came up with the 41-megapixel Nokia 808 PureView, launched back in February. And more recently his know-how had a key role to play in developing the amazing low-light performance capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 920.
You might suspect that his Start screen would be full of camera and imaging apps, and you'd be half-right. But let's take a look.

Well, yes there are definitely cameras and pictures in there. But at the end of the day, everyone needs their phone to connect with other people.

So, as he told us, he has given the first tiles to the most important people in his life – so he "can see their updates at a glance".

The first tiles also include calendar, music hub, photos hub, and some news applications.

"I like the Aukio app, because it collects news from several sources and and has a live tile. I also have the airplane mode and cellular data connection on the top because I travel a lot."

For social media, his weapon of choice is Twabbit, a "nice Twitter client".

"Then there are some maps and apps, and of course a big chunk of imaging apps. Most of the tiles are small because there are so many of them in the Start screen. My favourite image editing apps are Nokia Creative Studio and Thumba," says Juha.

"I also spend a lot of time with Cinemagraph, but I start it from the camera lens picker, so I don't have a tile for it in the Start screen. Regarding imaging and photos, I have synchronized the 'white flag' photos from Lightroom to Skydrive, so my photo archive travels with me."

"The latter part of the Start screen has various applications: news from various sources, battery level, Shazam, World clock, etc. Most of the tiles at the bottom of the Start screen are big because it makes them quicker to notice when scrolling the screen."

Which app is your guilty pleasure?

"Well, none of the apps specifically, but maybe I'm spending too much time with my phone :-) "

Most popular stories of 2012
Dec 31st 2012, 20:45

Another year has rolled by, and what a year! We've written loads of stories for you to read, covering wide range of topics. Let's look back at this year's stories and see what you read the most.

We've split the year into months to bring you 12 of the most read stories of 2012.

January

At the start of the year, Nokia announced the new Nokia Lumia 900 – CNET's choice as 'best of CES smartphone' – and that it was coming to AT&T customers in the United States. Fortunately for Lumia lovers, it started rolling out to other countries a little while later.

Nokia 808 Pureview

February

It's really no surprise that this was February's most read story. The innovative Nokia 808 PureView stunned consumers, fans and analysts alike. The 41-megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss optics and Nokia's pixel oversampling technology left people's jaws on the floor.

March

Following on from the successful launch of the Nokia 808 PureView, the high-performing cameraphone went on to win the Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2012. It's no wonder; PureView was five years in the making. A lot of effort went into making this game-changing technology happen.

April

Soon after the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900 in the US, Nokia had identified a software issue in the device that lead to some people experiencing data connectivity loss. To acknowledge this and to try to rectify this issue, Nokia advised that anybody who had already purchased a Nokia Lumia 900 could swap their current Lumia 900 for an updated one, or update their software themselves.

Additionally, as a way of saying sorry for any inconvenience caused, every individual who purchased a Lumia 900 would receive a $100 credit on his or her AT&T bill from Nokia.

Nokia Lumia 900 video proof

May

With its Corning Gorilla Glass, the Nokia Lumia 900 is one tough cookie. So much so that two of Nokia's engineer wanted to test just how tough it is.

Using a hammer and nails, they put the screen of the Nokia Lumia 900 through some tough tests. They then used the phone as a hammer to pummel some nails into a piece of wood. The result? Find out for yourself and check out the video.

June

One of the exiting new partnerships of the year was with Zynga who create social games for people around the world. This partnership saw the availability of Draw Something and Words With Friends to Lumia owners.

Nokia also announced a bunch of apps to enhance your smartphone experience, such as; Camera Extras, Contact Share, Counters, and PlayTo. There was also room to include a software update for Lumia 710 and 800 owners, bringing Internet Sharing, Flip-to-Silence and media streaming from your phone.

There was a lot happening in that post – something for everyone.

July

The title says it all really. The Nokia Lumia smartphones are so full of features that you might not know about all of them.

Did you know you could take a photo without unlocking your phone? Well, you can.

And, did you know you could use your own voice to perform certain tasks of your Lumia? You can do that, too. Plus, 8 other things.. Check it out.

10 things you never knew your Lumia could do

August

The month before Nokia World 2012, we gave details about a new format to the event. Nokia held a series of smaller – more intimate – events, targeting specific audiences.

There's always much excitement around Nokia World each year and this was no different. This story became the month's most popular story.

September

This was a very busy month for us on Conversations, and also for you readers, it seems.

We brought you news on the new Nokia Lumia 920, the Nokia Lumia 820 and more. It was our post on comparing the brilliant Nokia Maps to our competitors that really caught your attention.

October

In October we announced a new entry-level smartphone that comes in red, yellow, cyan, white and black. This was the Nokia Lumia 510, our most affordable Lumia to date.

November

For years, Nokia smartphone users have been able to use our top-notch navigation software to get from A-to-B. In November, we announced that our Nokia mapping service would be heading to iOS, Android and Firefox OS users – powered by HERE platform.

Nokia Lumia 620 page

December

Our family of Windows Phone 8 smartphones is growing and the Nokia Lumia 620 becomes the third member to join that family. It's also currently the most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone. Following the same CMYK colour palette as the rest of the family, Nokia has created a new blend of colours – called Dual Shot – by overlaying a transparent CMYK colour over a CMYK base colour to bring new colours.

We'll be going over some more stories of 2012, so keep reading over the coming days.

Exclusive: BlackBerry X10 (N Series) Clear Photos
The BlackBerry N-Series has been more elusive than the L-Series. We haven't quite seen so many leaks for the device. We did capture its first glimpse as a render in a promotional video.
Since then, we've only been given a Mr. Blurry Cam look at the back-side and front of the N-Series. Furthermore, we've learned the final production name for the N-Series might be BlackBerry X10.

Nonetheless, take a gander at these new clear photos of the X10. We finally see how the screen proportions look with icon rows. What do you think of the BlackBerry X10?

Karateka
Dec 30th 2012, 17:23

Description
From PRINCE OF PERSIA creator Jordan Mechner, the original side-scrolling karate classic comes to the iPad and iPhone with stunning graphics and innovative gameplay. *IMPORTANT* Karateka requires iPhone 4S or newer, iPad 2 or newer, or iPod Touch (5th generation).

"Instantly, addictively fun" -MacLife

"For those who remember the original, the new Karateka must not be missed. And to those with no prior knowledge: you have a excellent, new experience in store." -Touch Arcade (4.5 stars)

"With a stunning makeover and simplistic but compelling action, this terrific update brings Karateka into the 21st century in style." -Cnet

****

Whether you are a nostalgic Karateka fan or new to the game, Karateka will charm you with its classic love story set in feudal Japan. Fight to save the lovely Mariko from the evil warlord Akuma and reunite her with her True Love!

BREATHTAKINGLY CINEMATIC

Karateka comes to new life with art by Jeff Matsuda (The Batman) and music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin (Civilization IV).

FANTASTIC FIGHTING

Easy to grasp yet challenging to master, the rhythm-based karate combat tells a simple human story. Three suitors vie to save Mariko: A fearsome Brute, a noble Monk, and her brave True Love.

HIGHLY REPLAYABLE

"A brilliant life system that delivers variety in the gameplay as well as incredible replay value; you won't want to stop playing until you rescue Mariko as her True Love and see the storybook ending." - Touch Arcade

PUNCH THE HAWK!

"Fun for those of us who played the original on an Apple II, Commodore 64, or even an NES, but younger gamers will still appreciate the unique style and easy-to-learn gameplay." -ArsTechnica

"Karateka is widely considered to be one of the greatest 8-bit home computer games ever created. It wasn't a game so much as a living story that you, the player, were a part of... The new Karateka legitimately feels like it might be what Mechner's original idea would have been, if then were now." - Touch Arcade

*IMPORTANT* Karateka requires iPhone 4S or newer, iPad 2 or newer, or iPod Touch (5th generation). Karateka does NOT support earlier devices such as iPad 1, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3GS.

6.1 inch! Huawei the giant screen phone Ascend mate again
Dec 29th 2012, 18:17

There is no doubt that Huawei's 6.1-inch giant screen phone is the real news that it will debut in the CES 2013 . Following Yu Chengdong the first to demonstrate the aircraft, the domestic media digital tail also got some of the details of this phone.

The news that this 6.1 inch phone the Ascend mate back with a curved design, from the middle to the edge of the curve, the body is very light and thin , the screen display is very good.

Before exposure parameters Ascend mate body thickness of less than 9.9mm, equipped with a 6.1-inch 1080p touch screen, equipped with quad-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz (model may be the Hass K3V3) and 2GB of RAM at the same time, and to provide 13 million pixel camera and 4000mAh capacity battery.

Huawei Ascend Mate leaked again ahead of expected CES unveiling
Dec 29th 2012, 18:16

Following the first sighting in the wild of Huawei's upcoming 6.1 inch monster phone, the Ascend Mate, the device has been leaked once more ahead of an expected CES unveiling. This time, the device is seen posing for a series of photos alongside -- albeit, only just -- another Huawei device we're expecting to see at CES, the 5 inch D2.

The photos obtained by MyDrivers, show what is essentially a big -- really big -- black slab, with on-screen buttons. There appears to be a slight curve to the back of the device, which should make it a little nicer to hold in the hand. If a 6.1 inch smartphone could ever, truly feel nice in the hand. Thickness is supposedly just 9.9mm.

Spec information still remains in the rumor territory at present, but MyDrivers goes on to claim that the Ascend Mate is powered by a quad-core 1.8GHz processor -- likely an in house effort -- 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and a 4000mAh battery. Nothing here sounds too out of the ordinary, certainly not for a 2013 release, but until we actually get something official we'll keep the rumor tag on them.

Along with the photos, a leaked advertisement for the Ascend Mate has also been seen. It makes no bones about who Huawei is competing with in this space -- the 5.5 inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Samsung has set an extremely high bar in the super sized phone market with the Note and the Note 2, and anyone who considers challenging had better bring their 'A' game. The Note offers a specific experience though, with the S-Pen, whereas at least for the time being, the Ascend Mate just looks like a gargantuan sized version of some of Huawei's other Android smartphones.

Whatever the Ascend Mate may or may not turn out to be, Android Central will be in Las Vegas to bring you all the action as it unfolds.

TechNewsWorld: Ouya Comes Out of the Gate Running

Ouya Comes Out of the Gate Running
Dec 29th 2012, 13:00

Ouya may be the little gaming console that could. It enjoyed spectacular success as a Kickstarter project, bringing in more than eight times its target investment goal. Now, the startup is pleasantly surprising its fans by actually shipping developer units on schedule. It appears the tiny open source device has the potential to radically disrupt the gaming world.

The gaming revolution has begun.

Ouya, a startup that launched with the outsized goal of challenging the big three gaming platforms of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, reported on Friday that it had shipped 1,200 consoles to developers. The Android-based product is a deceptively simple-looking cube the size of a coffee mug, which is meant to hook up to a television set.

The fact that Ouya is an open TV/console platform is its competitive differentiator as it tries to make headway in the gaming space.

The developer package consists of a frosted translucent console with a micro-USB port, controllers, batteries, and assorted cables and adapters.

The startup also gave fans a sneak peak at what its console UI might look like on its blog. The company is also releasing its ODK under a free software license.

Birth of an Upstart

Ouya is the creation of video game veteran Julie Uhrman, formerly the VP/GM of digital distribution at IGN Entertainment. Uhrman and her colleagues used Kickstarter to raise funds for the project, pulling in some US$8.5 million after launching with a goal of a mere $950,000.

The campaign attracted a wide range of investors including retail investors -- that is, ordinary consumers -- interested in the concept. In return for a small investment in the campaign, they will receive a finished Ouya when it is expected to ship in April 2013. Investors who contributed larger sums are receiving the developer edition.

A Work in Progress

The developer edition is still very much a work in progress, Ouya staff said in a YouTube video of the device's unboxing.

The device currently shipping does not have any games, as it is meant purely for development. Ouya is still tweaking the geometry of the triggers to optimize the hand controls and overall gamer experience. Also, the developer console was designed to be opened so developers can play with its hardware.

Exclusive to the developer version is the translucent plastic shell.

A Competitive Play

All signs point to a competitive entry into the gaming space for Ouya.

"The box is inexpensive, so it should be able to compete," Michael Pachter, managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities, told TechNewsWorld.

"They will have a lot of games available, so there should be a lot of consumer interest," he added. Since the box will support Android games, there should be a lot of content right at launch.

"I don't think that Ouya needs to sell many more than a million boxes to be profitable, and there should be at least that much demand annually, provided that they get developer support," noted Pachter.

Ouya did not respond to our request for further details.

Those Spicy Snapchat Vids Don't Self-Destruct
Dec 28th 2012, 22:46

By using a simple file viewer, recipients of photos or videos meant to disappear once they're viewed can actually save them indefinitely. Both Snapchat and Facebook's Poke app offer similar services, and both are vulnerable to the flaw. For its part, Facebook says Poke was never meant to be a secure messaging system, but a fun way to share media files.

So you thought those photos and videos you sent using Snapchat or Poke -- you know, the embarrassing ones -- were supposed to self-destruct after being viewed by the intended recipient? Not so fast.

It turns out that there's a way to save them that doesn't require a lot of skill or expense.

BuzzFeed did a little testing, and found that when an iPhone on the receiving end of a message is plugged into a PC to sync, it is possible to search the phone's temporary files and find the videos sent via Snapchat or Poke.

Snapchat is a social media startup that lets users send photos and videos to friends. The videos are supposed to disappear within a few seconds after viewing. Knowing this, users might push the limits of taste and decency.

Last week, Facebook got into the action by launching its Poke feature in the form of a mobile app that lets users send a quick message, photo or video to Facebook friends. The message doesn't get posted, instead it expires within seconds and "the message disappears from the app."

The Stark Light of the Photo

Facebook addressed concerns with an explanation that it does not promise a secure way to send images.

"Poke is a fun and easy way to communicate with your friends and is not designed to be a secure messaging system. While Pokes disappear after they are read, there are still ways that people can potentially save them. For example, you can take a screenshot of a photo, in which case the sender is notified. People could also take a photo of a photo you send them, or a video of a video, with another camera. Because of this, people should think about what they are sending and share responsibly," Facebook spokesperson Johanna Peace told TechNewsWorld.

Worth a Thousand Words

"The issue is the question of the longevity of a digital message. It's supposed to be a temporary item that's not so temporary," Roger Kay, principal at Endpoint Technologies Associates told TechNewsWorld. Digital information is very easy to replicate. "It's a string of bits."

The target audience includes people who share a lot of photos and videos, from selfies -- or self portraits, to food porn and prank videos.

"These are meant for right now, just a laugh to share with friends," said Kay.

The issue is that users may intend for photos and videos to be shared with an individual or a small group, but not everyone. If messages aren't deleted, they can end up in the hands of someone not originally intended to receive them.

"There are many people with fingers in that digital stream, and they can pluck it out," said Kay.

Even if the images didn't live on the handset of the recipient, users should not feel assured that copies, or data surrounding those images, don't exist elsewhere.

"I think for people who believe that they can send anything electronically and not be preserved are being naive," Alan Webber, analyst at Altimeter Group, told TechNewsWorld.

Online services operate around data, and in order for an interaction to be useful, these services save some portion of data.

"If you have an application that effectively deletes or erases something, then that doesn't help them out," Webber said.

The Best Form of Flattery

Facebook joined the crowd by launching its Poke app Dec. 21, around the time Snapchat began to pick up activity -- and controversy.

"With all this becoming well known, you would think these social sites would dry up and die, but they are still growing faster than ever," tech industry analyst Jeff Kagan told TechNewsWorld. "Users would prefer the safety and privacy, but the funny thing is, even without it they don't stop. They are still there front and center."

Perhaps the public should live by the motto that when you hit the send button, it will forever become part of a personal archive.

"If you're not willing for the whole world to see it, don't send it," said Webber. "I think we have to shift what we think."
