Latest Ericsson Mobility Report forecasts strong smartphone subscription and mobile data traffic uptake
Nov 11th 2013, 19:22, by Maximus

Johan Wibergh, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Unit Networks, discusses the latest Mobility Report and key findings.

"One of the really interesting facts in this edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report is that the number of mobile broadband subscriptions will quadruple from today's 2 billion subscriptions up to 8 billion by 2019," says Johan Wibergh, Head of Business Unit Networks, in an Ericsson film interview about the report.

"The amount of data sent by each smartphone will also quadruple up to 2019. That means, in 2019, over a period of just two weeks, five exabytes of information will be sent by the average smartphone user."

Ericsson's research shows that online video is the biggest contributor to mobile traffic volumes, constituting 25 percent of total smartphone traffic and 40 percent of total tablet traffic. This puts new requirements on networks to cater for quality anywhere and anytime.

If the amount of mobile broadband subscriptions quadruples between now and 2019, imagine who will be using them. Many of the new subscribers are likely to be people who have never been connected to the internet before. Wibergh highlights how the market in Africa will develop.

"Today 80 percent of all subscriptions are on 2G," he says. "In the coming six years this will completely change. In 2019, 80 percent of the subscriptions will be 3G or 4G instead, which will enable mobile broadband and the internet for the vast population of Africa."

In this edition of the report we also look beyond our usual update and outlook on mobile traffic with an analysis of mobile traffic distribution over different device types and operating systems. We also include consumer research results on perceived differences in voice and internet coverage at different locations in a city.

Ericsson has performed in-depth data traffic measurements since the early days of mobile broadband from a large base of live networks covering all regions of the world. The aim of the Ericsson Mobility Report is to share analysis based on these measurements, internal forecasts and other relevant studies to provide insights into the current traffic and market trends.
