Twitter Forecast Up After Strong Mobile Showing
Mar 31st 2013, 18:42

Twitter ad revenue to near $1 billion in 2014
eMarketer has raised its forecast for advertising spending on Twitter for 2013 and 2014, estimating the company will earn $582.8 million in global ad revenue in 2013 before nearing $1 billion next year.

According to the new forecast, more than half of Twitter's ad revenues—about 53%—will come from mobile advertising this year, up from virtually no ad revenue from mobile in 2011.

Advertising on mobile devices will be where Twitter sees the most incremental growth over the next two years. By 2015, Twitter is expected to pull in $1.33 billion in worldwide ad revenue, more than 60% of which will come from mobile advertising.

The upward revision comes as advertisers have shown more interest in spending money on mobile advertisements on Twitter, and as recent audience figures from multiple research sources analyzed by eMarketer have suggested Twitter's reach is improving.

eMarketer believes Twitter has ultimately benefited from the increased focus on mobile by competitors like Google and Facebook, which have both expanded their own mobile ad offerings and worked to convince advertisers to shift dollars to mobile devices. The launch of the Ads API will also contribute to incremental growth for Twitter this year, though eMarketer had already built that product into its December forecast for mobile ad revenues.

Twitter also continues to benefit from what has been termed the "native" nature of its ad products, whose integration with the core user experience of the platform allows the company to deliver similar ads seamlessly across multiple devices at high volume. It also means the company has been able to build its mobile advertising business quickly.

eMarketer estimates Twitter will earn $308.9 million in mobile ad revenue in 2013—which is more than the company earned in total, from any ad type, in 2012, when it made $138.4 million from mobile ads.

The bulk of Twitter's ad revenue is expected to continue to come from the US—about 83% this year, down from 90% in 2012. By 2015, Twitter's continued expansion of foreign sales operations is expected to help non-US ad revenue reach $319 million, up from just under $100 million this year.

eMarketer forms its forecast through an analysis of estimates from many research sources that track media buying trends, advertising and other revenue indicators; Twitter usage statistics from research firms and user surveys; and eMarketer interviews with executives at ad agencies, brands, online ad publishers and other industry leaders.

While eMarketer's estimates for Twitter's revenue in 2012 remain unchanged compared to the previous forecast, the figures for future years have increased significantly to reflect the company's recent trajectory. eMarketer forecast in September that Twitter would earn just over $800 million in 2014, and did not issue an estimate on 2015 revenue.

TechNewsWorld: The UK's Bloody Mad Blogosphere Battle

TechNewsWorld
TechNewsWorld -- "All Tech, All the Time" // via fulltextrssfeed.com
The UK's Bloody Mad Blogosphere Battle
Mar 30th 2013, 12:00

The phone hacking scandal in the UK prompted a far-reaching investigation into the practices and ethics of the British media. Arrests have been made, jobs lost, and new laws proposed. However, some bloggers argue the legislation is unclear about what constitutes a "relevant publisher," and that they could become ensnared by stringent regulations meant for major media companies.

News surfaced last week that the UK was mulling an overhaul of press regulations. The legislation, born out of the phone-hacking investigation known as the Leveson Inquiry, is designed, among other things, to better regulate online media.

Alas, while trying to account for more media outlets, the legislation never bothered to define what it considered a media outlet. The resulting uproar from bloggers and website operators -- people who don't bear much resemblance to media -- highlighted the ambiguity about how the regulations would be enforced and who would be liable.

In this TechNewsWorld podcast, we talk with Nick Pickles, the director of Big Brother Watch, a UK-based civil rights organization. Pickles explains how this legislation came to be, what's worrisome about the current wording, and what his organization is doing to avoid what it considers a gargantuan intrusion into Web-based content.

Download the podcast (14:48) or use the player:

Here are some excerpts from the podcast:

TechNewsWorld: Big Brother Watch has written about the proposed regulations and you all dubbed it "an unwieldy and unpredictable piece of legislative horsetrading." And you weren't alone in this criticism.

I know Carla Buzasi, the editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post UK, said that she was concerned over the confusion surrounding the legislation and said that she felt the proposals were "rushed." And then Harry Cole, who has a blog in the UK, said that the regulatory changes were put together in "chaotic fashion."

So it seems like not only the proposals themselves, but also the way they were constructed, has kind of rubbed people the wrong way. I'm curious if you could tell me what these grievances are, and what it was about the process that has bugged some people?

Nick Pickles: Yeah, I think that the process has been a bit of a disaster, really. If you look at the way the Parliament is drawing up the law, they need to decide who's going to be covered by this new press regulator. We've had a year-long inquiry into the media -- we thought everyone had a pretty clear idea about what the point of this law was going to be. And then there were some late-night negotiations between the political parties, and at 2 o'clock in the morning they came to an agreement; the law was proposed in Parliament.

And then when we saw the details. It became very clear that the net was being cast much, much wider -- everybody from two-person blogs was going to be covered, as well as multimillion-pound newspaper empires. And we've been campaigning in the past week to try and get the government to fix this problem.

And fortunately, at the last minute, the government has recognized that this is an issue, so they're now going to hold off passing this law for a few weeks so they can get everyone around the table -- so they can actually decide how they will phrase this definition so that groups like Big Brother Watch, who may have two or three people writing on their website, but we're definitely not big newspapers, won't get caught up in the press regulator ... .

TNW: The net that you said was cast wider than people were anticipating -- it seems like the crux of that issue was surrounding the ambiguity of the phrase "relevant publisher." This is something that -- it was inserted into the legislation -- that any relevant publisher could be held accountable, but this term was never really defined. How has that debate kind of been carried out -- what is and is not a publisher -- and how is the law going to take into account the million different ways that people publish things nowadays?

Pickles: Well, that was one of the problems. This definition of relevant publisher was produced, but there wasn't a public debate about it. We haven't had widespread public input; we haven't had an opportunity to discuss this.

It was right down to the wire, and a few days ago we managed to find a member of the House of Lords who could table an amendment to actually put in a protection that says, you know, "We don't define small publishers as anyone below a certain financial size," just to give people that protection.

Because the worry is, if all the bill says is, "We exempt small publishers," then the first person who gets sued is going to have to go all the way to the highest courts, spending their own money, arguing that they were a small publisher and therefore should be exempt. And for a lot of small organizations and small blogs, they just simply won't have the money to do that.

So you either risk those guys shutting down and censoring themselves, or someone going bankrupt and losing their home because they spent everything they have trying to go to court to get a definition of what Parliament meant when it said "small." So the law needs to be much, much clearer -- before it gets passed -- on that point.

TNW: It's interesting, the idea of using a revenue or profit threshold to determine what is and is not a relevant publisher, because so many media outlets nowadays are losing money -- they're hemorrhaging money. So you could have something that's thought of as a big, reputable outlet, but it's not making any money. Is there a potential pitfall in trying to use annual earnings to do this because a lot of the annual earnings right now for media outlets are so meager?

Pickles: Yeah, absolutely. And equally, there are situations where you have people who say, "If you only have a few staff, then you won't be considered a relevant publisher." But as quite a few media organizations pointed out, a lot of the specialist people who do break a lot of news -- you know, look at Drudge Report. Would Drudge Report, if it was in the UK, be considered a relevant publisher? On a revenue point, and on a staff point, you might get very different answers.

And we've got UK websites like Drudge that are very small, don't have huge revenues, but do break a lot of news. And I think that's where people are trying to decide where to draw the line. And it's a very, very difficult point to make, but it's essential that we don't just rely on 2 o'clock in the morning deals, and actually do discuss this properly before we pass the laws.

Facebook's Android-Themed Event Invite Redials Phone Chatter
Mar 29th 2013, 22:24

The media is once again cueing up its Facebook phone speculation, but this time it may be for good reason. An invitation to an April 4 company event mentions Android, and that is conjuring up visions not only of a Facebook-branded smartphone, but a custom-designed version of Google's operating system that plays up social network functionality and features. The possibility that user data may be leveraged is also getting the attention of privacy advocates.

Facebook is inviting the media to "come see our new home on Android" during an April 4 event, sparking speculation that the social network may indeed be getting ready to introduce a branded smartphone.

There is also speculation that Facebook will unveil a modified version of the Android operating system with added social functionality.

The blog 9to5Google claims that HTC, which introduced a phone with a Facebook button in 2011, has been working with the social network on a major marketing campaign that will feature ads focusing on potential uses for the anticipated smartphone.

Possible Privacy Issues

Facebook may set off warning bells among privacy advocates whether it unveils a smartphone or a tweaked version of Android.

"When it comes to privacy, we should be very skeptical of whatever Facebook does," John Simpson of Consumer Watchdog, told TechNewsWorld. "Just like with Google, Facebook's users are not its customers; they are Facebook's product."

However, "I have to think Facebook is cognizant of the Beaconesque pitfalls here," said Justin Brookman of the Center for Democracy and Technology. That's because the company is still under a consent order from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and ongoing supervision by Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner office.

Facebook Beacon was a much-criticized feature of Facebook's ad system that sent data from external websites to its own. It was shut down in 2009 after the company faced a class-action lawsuit.

Facebook spokesperson Ulysses King declined to comment for this story.

A Facebook Phone's Face Value

If Facebook is actually working on a smartphone, the device would have "a heavy focus on social integration, improved notifications and updates, automatic location sharing, proximity alerts for friends, and aggressive alerting for a variety of events, including those driven by vendors," Rob Enderle, prinicipal with the Enderle Group told TechNewsWorld. However, "I'm expecting more of a collaboration and custom apps than a Facebook-driven phone."

A possible Facebook smartphone would "deeply integrate Facebook communication capabilities, such as messaging, perhaps some video chat, social gaming and so forth," said Michael Morgan of ABI Research. "All of this would ... circumvent carrier services such as text and media messaging. Perhaps they would even focus on voice over IP that bypasses operator core networks when used on WiFi."

"Obviously there would be lots of opportunities to integrate, but if any of those aren't intuitive or clearly messaged to users, [Facebook] would get into trouble -- both by losing consumer goodwill and with regulators," Brookman told TechNewsWorld.

It's not likely that Facebook will unveil its own smartphone because "it would be very difficult to get this type of phone off the ground, as you would need some operator support, and would not get that support," Morgan told TechNewsWorld.

"Facebook has already had HTC make them a phone with a dedicated Facebook button on it, and the device was not a success," he added.

That smartphone is the HTC Status, which was unveiled in the US in 2011.

Facebook Tweaks Android?

Facebook may also be working on its own version of Android. "Facebook would want to be able to deliver more of the desktop-level functionality to the mobile experience," Morgan said. "To do this, they might need additional control over certain things or additional unique HTML5 support."

Nearly two-thirds of the Android versions in the market "are custom and are outside of Google's control," Enderle said. "This is spread between Asian OEMs that separated from Google and Amazon's Kindle platform."

Facebook will leverage its own infrastructure with a tweaked version of Android in the same way Amazon leverages its infrastructure to give faster search results on its Kindle tablets. Such a tweaked version, Enderle said, "would be tied closely to Facebook's social experience and ad model."

TechNewsWorld: Gamers Get Hardcore on Razer's Edge

Gamers Get Hardcore on Razer's Edge
Mar 29th 2013, 19:18

Razer has redefined what gamers can expect from a tablet with its new Edge. When it comes to tablets and gaming, it is usually casual games that spring to mind, with players shooting Angry Birds, dashing about in Temple Run and getting Simpson's Tapped Out. However, Razer's gaming-optimized Windows 8 tablet is actually more like a gaming PC than a traditional entertainment tablet.

Razer's Edge is now shipping, preinstalled with Steam software, Valve's online gaming delivery and management service, which offers access to more than 2,000 titles.

"It is certainly an impressive device, one that is really an all-in-one computer with a touchscreen," said Lewis Ward, IDC research manager for gaming. "It can play the hardcore titles that gamers want to play, and in this way is much richer as a gaming machine than what the iOS or Android devices now offer."

There is no denying that games are what the Razer Edge was conceived for, and this 10-inch Windows 8-based tablet actually features hardware that one would expect to find within a mid-range gaming laptop. It has a 1.5-GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM, an Nvidia GT 640 LE (1 GB) graphics card, and 64 GB SSD. The base system retails for $999.

Gamers can bump up the specs a bit with the Razer Edge Pro version, which offers a faster 1.9-GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GT 640 LE (2 GB) graphics card. With 128 GB of on-board storage, the unit is priced at $1,299; with 256 GB of storage, it is priced at $1,449.

In all of its configurations, the Edge offers a 10.1-inch 1366x768 display, which is about 155 pixels per inch (ppi). This is less than native full HD (1080p), but the Edge features an HDMI port, which allows games to be run on HDTV. The system can reportedly handle both 720p and 1080p output.

Touch Down

As it is a tablet, the Edge is touchscreen-friendly and thus is compatible with games that take advantage of that -- such as Civilization V. The Edge features a USB 3.0 port that allows users to connect existing peripherals.

However, Razer seems to know that it could corner the market with its own add-on devices, including a gamepad that snaps onto the tablet, with a controller mounted to each side. It provides a standard gamepad interface with analog thumbsticks, action buttons, d-pad, triggers and shoulder buttons.

Razer also offers a docking station for the TV.

These accessories do increase the functionality and versatility of the system, but at an increased cost. In other words, the Edge is on the cutting edge of tablet gaming devices, but it is expensive to get there.

"As hardware, the Razer Edge is pretty sweet," said GeorgeT. Chronis, editor of DFC Dossier.

"Then again, so is the PS Vita, so well-crafted hardware isn't always the determining factor," he noted.

"In Razer's case, the Edge is directed at a pretty defined niche, so success can be had with rather modest sales compared to a Vita," Chronis told TechNewsWorld. "Right now, we see the Edge having an appeal with the same kinds of people who purchase gaming laptops: students and other nomadic young adults with access to cash."

Bringing the Gamer to Tablets

The Razer Edge could be the system that brings the hardcore gamer to the tablet.

"The market here is the non-casual gamer," said video game industry consultant Mark Lewis Baldwin of Baldwin Consulting.

"With current tablets, non-casual games have not succeeded very well. The most complex game I can think of on the iPad is Magic the Gathering," he said.

"Part of the problem has been technology, in that tablets have trouble managing the processing and graphics of non-casual games. There is also a technology issue of interface," Baldwin told TechNewsWorld. "Non-casual games call for more complex input. You need a full keyboard for World of Warcraft."

There has been a dearth of non-casual games on tablets, which in essence means that serious gamers won't embrace the technology.

"This creates a chicken and egg problem," added Baldwin.

However, Windows 8 could be the game changer, bringing more hardcore games to the tablet platform.

"Given that this is a Windows-based tablet, the opportunity to run much more intensive games is there, and the Edge supports more advanced input control than your average tablet. So there is a lot to like for that demographic," said DFC Dossier's Chronis.

"Everyone else is a wait-and-see affair. Whether the mainstream is ready for a hardcore tablet is debatable," he added. "Now, if Razer and Microsoft can think up a connection to the next Xbox console, things could get more interesting."

Tablet as Gaming Platform

For years, many game developers and publishers saw the mobile phone only as a niche product for gaming, and it wasn't really embraced until the arrival of the iPhone. Now, with iOS and Android having large install bases, the market has shifted -- more and more people play games on mobile devices.

It is possible that Razer could help tablets become the next big portable gaming device -- not just for casual games, but for serious hardcore games as well.

"This is what a gaming Windows 8 experience should be," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group.

"Windows 8 is a blend of PC and tablet technologies, yet you typically get it in a light tablet that lacks Windows performance, or a desktop or laptop PC that has the performance but isn't a tablet," he told TechNewsWorld.

"For gaming, you need both performance and a tablet form factor," noted Enderle, "and Razer created that in their product, which evidently sold out relatively fast -- despite its relatively high purchase price."
