Nokia at the ESPYs – Grab amazing Dave Kinsey artwork
Jul 31st 2012, 20:16

ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports broadcasting, hosted ESPY awards a few weeks ago. The ESPYs is ESPNs annual award show that celebrates the achievements and accolades of athletes from all areas of sport. Nokia was at the ESPYs, hosting parties and athletes and showing off the Nokia Lumia 900.
As a part of the festivities, Nokia teamed up with artist Dave Kinsey to create custom artwork for the athletes. The good news for all of us is that we get to share in the awesomeness of his amazing artwork as Nokia has made the artwork available to download.

For those unfamiliar with him, Dave Kinsey is a world-renowned graphical artist whose work you've seen on many logos and album art covers.

As a part of the Nokia Pre-Party which was attended by athletes, influencers and celebrities, Dave Kinsey created more than 80 pieces of art which were available as wallpapers for the Nokia Lumia 900.

Athletes such as Donald Driver, Evan Longoria and Mike Miller received Lumia 900s with custom artwork for their phones.

If you're looking for a sports-inspired background for your Nokia phone, be sure to grab the ZIP file of all the images – there are 11 in total.

Each piece was created by Dave Kinsey and will look stunning on your phone or computer.

TechNewsWorld: Microsoft Debuts Shiny New Mobile Peripherals

Microsoft Debuts Shiny New Mobile Peripherals
Jul 31st 2012, 18:54

Microsoft has introduced a batch of new keyboards and mice designed for mobile devices, perhaps following Apple's lead in building a complete ecosystem of matching software and hardware. "Microsoft has been building up its retail location assets for a while to espouse a similar 'build the ecosystem, sell the experience' strategy," noted Altimeter Group analyst Chris Silva.

Microsoft Hardware on Monday unveiled several new mobile-friendly keyboards and mice designed specifically for use with its forthcoming Windows 8 and tablets: the Wedge Touch Mouse, the Wedge Mobile Keyboard, the Sculpt Touch Mouse, and the Sculpt Mobile Keyboard.

On Oct. 26, when Windows 8 becomes officially available, Microsoft will also be releasing new Windows 8 gestures for the Microsoft Touch Mouse.

Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard

Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard

The Wedge Touch Mouse is pocket-sized, offers four-way touch scrolling and navigation, and can be used on a variety of surfaces. The Wedge Mobile Keyboard is intended for use with a tablet, but with the feel of a full-size keyboard, and its cover converts to a tablet stand.

The Sculpt Touch Mouse includes a four-way touch scroll strip for up-and-down, left-and-right navigation, and it allows for users to swipe through windows and documents. And the Sculpt Mobile Keyboard is lightweight and has an ergonomic design.

Back to the Future

"Microsoft has always been a big player in the peripheral segment," technology consultant Eric Brown told TechNewsWorld.

"[It] sees the market moving away from a desktop/laptop-centric environment to a mobile- and agile-focused environment focused on tablets and phones," he said. "These new releases highlight the fact that they are thinking about the mobile marketplace and are positioning their peripheral segment squarely in the middle of that market."

With these new peripherals, Microsoft is highlighting the centrality of mobility in both its software and hardware.

"It seems to many [that] Microsoft is going back into the hardware game, [but] I don't see it that way," Chris Silva, a mobile industry analyst with the Altimeter Group, told TechNewsWorld.

"A new OS is coming out, and based on the past debacle that was the Vista launch -- where hardware partners did not have a chance to prep hardware and drivers pre-release -- Microsoft is providing reference architecture products that are designed to showcase the features in Windows 8," he said.

"Windows 8 is the first truly multiscreen OS that Microsoft has launched, [so] it has a vested interest in showcasing a fleet of related products to sell an ecosystem and an experience, not just software," continued Silva.

Tablet-friendliness seems to be the name of the game for Microsoft with these peripherals.

"The mice -- especially the wedge-shaped ones -- appear to be designed with gestures in mind," Avi Greengart, research director for consumer devices with Current Analysis, told TechNewsWorld.

"The keyboard cover with tablet stand suggests that Microsoft expects many consumers to buy tablets this fall, though its Surface models will come with their own keyboards built into their covers, and stands built into the Surface itself," he pointed out.

Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse

Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse

In some ways, however, these new products are not exactly revolutionary.

"There are many similar products out in the marketplace from a number of vendors, so I am puzzled why Microsoft is even doing this," IT consultant Bill St. Arnaud told TechNewsWorld.

"The revenues will be tiny," he said. "I think it is another example of poor management and leadership at Microsoft."

Creating an Ecosystem

It might be, however, that Microsoft is simply following Apple's lead in building a complete ecosystem of matching software and hardware.

"Microsoft has been building up its retail location assets for a while to espouse a similar 'build the ecosystem, sell the experience' strategy," said Silva.

"The main difference [between Apple and Microsoft] is that Apple has pulled ahead to where the market is going, [making] money on well-designed hardware and [offering] up software at little cost," he said. "It'll be a while before Microsoft is there."

TechNewsWorld: DeepField Maps the Intricacies of the Cloud

TechNewsWorld
TechNewsWorld -- "All Tech, All the Time" // via fulltextrssfeed.com
DeepField Maps the Intricacies of the Cloud
Jul 31st 2012, 19:05

What is referred to as "the cloud" is really not as amorphous as it may seem -- it's a complex web of servers that form redundant, overlapping networks. How is a company that stores "big data" in the cloud to keep track of all its comings and goings? When things go wrong, it can be difficult to find out why. Thus, mapping the cloud becomes all the more essential.

The cloud -- as in, the offsite storage of data -- is becoming as vast and ever-changing as clouds in the sky, but DeepField Networks announced an analytics tool that could allow the flow of cloud-based data to be mapped.

This would include tracking traffic patterns, application performance and cost structure of networks for cloud computing companies as well as content providers and carriers.

This mapping of the cloud has already been compared to that of the genome -- and in some ways, the cloud has developed its own DNA.

"Comparing the cloud to genes is a bit of a stretch, and all analogies break down after a while," said Craig Labovitz, cofounder and CEO of DeepField Networks. "However, websites are built up from various components, and there are a lot of complexities in how these are built."

It is these complexities that have made the mapping increasingly challenging.

"The way the Internet and the servers work has really changed," Labovitz told TechNewsWorld. "Severs used to be in the closet or in a room in the building."

Servers Everywhere

Instead of being in the closet or a company's basement, storage has left the enterprise data center. As with much of the Internet, the result it is that it is everywhere. This is especially true for large businesses and many online sites.

This isn't a problem when things work -- in fact, it can ensure that a single outage doesn't bring a whole system down. However, when things go wrong, it can be difficult to find out why. Thus, mapping the cloud becomes all the more essential.

"If you can accurately map and attribute traffic by type and volume, you can identify bottlenecks, often locate spreading viruses, locate entities that are abusing or stressing the network, and then optimize the result for performance and cost," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst for the Enderle Group.

"Basically, a tool like this ensures the bottom line -- profit -- for companies providing complex networking services internally or externally," he pointed out, "and profit is what keeps the company afloat and the executives' bonuses intact."

This also addresses the underlying issue that by its nature, the performance of the cloud depends on how well the infrastructure is managed and even maintained. An outage in the cloud can bring down sites in a way that outages of whole server farms wouldn't have done just a few years ago.

"The fact is that many -- if not most -- cloud service providers do not offer deep insight into the cloud infrastructures they utilize," Charles King, principal analyst of Pund-IT, told TechNewsWorld. "In worst case scenarios, like the outage of Amazon's ECS in June, which impacted Netflix, Pinterest, Instagram and other Web services, companies may not have realized they were dependent on ECS until their businesses went offline."

In essence, DeepField's solutions provide its customers with ways to map the cloud infrastructures they and their SPs depend on, and allow them to monitor the health and performance of that infrastructure, said King.

"By using DeepField's solutions, customers will gain deeper insight into cloud dependencies that will help them better plan the management and rollout of their cloud-based services," he added.

Cloud Mining and Big Data

The demand for this technology could also increase. While it is mostly important to companies that are actively using public cloud services to support critical business processes, which is modest today, that is likely to increase over time.

"Many of the biggest complaints about cloud computing relate to transparency into performance and security issues," said King.

"There's no reason that cloud service providers couldn't offer similar services of their own -- but unless they do, DeepField could become a trusted 'seal of approval' provider for the cloud," he continued. "Given the modest size of the company, the real question may be whether the company remains independent or becomes an acquisition target for cloud-happy large vendors."

In the meantime however, DeepField Network's analytic tools also arrive as a new buzzword has crept into the lexicon, namely "big data." While not really new, it is a term that is being used to help users understand exactly how much data is being created, in part because of what the cloud has allowed.

"Big data has become synonymous with the cloud," said Labovitz, "but it is also an enabling technology. It means everything and nothing at the same time."

The very problem of data has been compounded by the uptick in computing power, which fortunately has also enabled the solution.

"There has really been an incredible evolution with the tool set and technology," added Labovitz. "This could not have existed four years ago, and we couldn't do what we are doing."

TechNewsWorld: Social Media Olympics Becoming Social Media Headache

TechNewsWorld
TechNewsWorld -- "All Tech, All the Time" // via fulltextrssfeed.com
Social Media Olympics Becoming Social Media Headache
Jul 31st 2012, 16:10

Today in international tech news: London claims that the 2012 games are the first-ever "social media Olympics," but that boast has come with headaches. Elsewhere, investors appear to have taken note of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba's rapid growth; Palestine is becoming a tech hub; more.

London 2012 billed itself as the "first social media Olympics," but that hasn't necessarily been a good thing so far.

A Los Angeles-based correspondent for the UK newspaper The Independent was banned from Twitter for published the email address of Gary Zenkel, who is in charge of NBC's Olympic coverage, according to the paper.

The British correspondent, Guy Adams, took to Twitter to decry NBC's decision to run the Opening Ceremony on a tape delay. The ceremony started at 4 p.m. Eastern in the U.S., but was not aired on NBC until 7 p.m. Eastern. West Coast viewers had to wait even longer.

Adams deemed this a money-grab, so he tweeted Zenkel's email address and implored people to write in.

As Adams explained in The Independent, his Twitter account was subsequently blocked by Twitter. NBC acknowledged filing a complaint with Twitter, but it stressed that Twitter alone doles out punishment.

Adams contended in his Independent article that Zenkel's email address was easily accessible to anyone via Google. However, SearchEngineLand.com tested that theory and said it wasn't valid.

Unsportsmanlike Tweeting

A 17-year-old in the UK was arrested for sending malicious tweets to British diver Tom Daley, according to the BBC. The tweet said that Daley, 18, had let down his father after finishing fourth in the 10 meter synchronized diving event. Daley's father died earlier this year.

Also, a Swiss soccer player was expelled for allegedly posting racist tweets, according to The Guardian.

Investors Pouring Money Into China's Alibaba

Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce website, is on the verge of finishing an US$8 billion round of financing, according to The New York Times.

The Times juxtaposes Alibaba's coffers -- the company has up to $43 billion in equity -- with many American Internet companies that are trying to lure investors.

Alibaba, which is similar to eBay, had more than $1.8 billion in revenue in the first half of this year. That's up more than 60 percent from the same period in 2011, according to the Times.

Alibaba will use its new dough to buy back half of Yahoo's stake in the company. Yahoo invested $1 billion in Alibaba in 2005, good for a 40 percent stake in the company. Anymore, that 40 percent stake makes up more than 50 percent of Yahoo's $20 billion value.

Palestine a Hotbed for Startups

The Guardian ran a feature Tuesday about how Palestine is emerging, improbably, as a breeding ground for tech startups.

An estimated 2,500 Palestinians work in IT, including telecommunication development and manufacturing equipment. Citing a report from U.S.-based multinational Cisco, The Guardian says that Palestine's IT sector grew from 0.8 percent of GDP in 2008 to 5 percent in 2010 -- and is still growing.

That growth was aided by nearly $80 million in foreign investments over the past three years, including a large 2009 investment from Cisco, which said Palestine could become a "high-tech global hotspot."

Civilian Wiretapping Huge in China

Civilian wiretapping is widespread in China thanks to an easy-to-use application, according to WantChinaTimes.com (translated from state-run China New Service).

The application, X-Turncoat, was banned in 2006, but it has nonetheless been installed on 1 million mobile phones since then, according to the article.

Eavesdroppers reportedly sell information -- for good money -- to con artists and advertising companies that nail the phone with spam.

By Chris Maxcer MacNewsWorld Part of the ECT News Network 07/31/12 5:00 AM PT

A weather forecast can be helpful in planning your day, but it's a static sort of report that gives you generalities. NOAA Hi-Def Radar, on the other hand, shows you what's really going on. It lets you view nearly real-time animated weather images on an interactive map. Is the storm on its way out, or will it be hanging around for a while? What's blowing in, from where, and how fast? NOAA helps you find out.

NOAA Hi-Def Radar, an app from Geoterrestrial, is available for US$1.99 at the App Store.

NOAA Hi-Def Radar

To me, the coolest things about an app aren't so much about the design or buttons or swiping, but how and why you would actually use the app -- the experiences that that app actually enables. NOAA Hi-Def Radar fits right in with me because it's all about showing what's going on in the world of weather all around you.

NOAA Hi-Def Radar lets you view near real-time animated weather radar images on an interactive map. If it's raining, the rain will show up on the map as a green blob. With some time-lapse magic, the app shows how the rain changes over time. So a green blog will get bigger, smaller, more intense. It'll move, disappear or start and stop in a new place depending on the time-lapse timing. You can change the loop speed and number of frames shown, but generally you'll look at what was happening an hour ago, 40 minutes ago, 20 minutes ago, and five minutes ago.

If the rain is more intense -- if it's a wicked storm -- it will show up in shades of red and orange, and their will likely be a bunch of green around it. If you zoom out, you can see all the rain activity in a multi-state window. You can zoom in to get greater detail, and you can choose which Google map form you want to see: Road, Satellite, Hybrid or Terrain.

If you want an actual weather report, you can drop a pin on the map and get an immediate moment and multi-day weather forecast overlay. It works for the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam.

How It Shakes Out

So why is this app handy? The weather forecast is one thing, a static sort of forecast that gives you generalities. NOAA radar, on the other hand, shows you what's really going on. I'm a Northwest kind of guy, and a couple of weekends ago, we were heading up into the mountains to go huckleberry picking. The weather report was scattered thundershowers. So, is it raining? Is it going to rain? Just because it's raining in town doesn't mean it's raining in the mountains, and even if it's raining in the mountains, that rain could easily be on a different mountain five miles away.

At the time, it was raining at a friend's house, and when I went to look outside, it was dark clouds in one direction and puffy white clouds in another -- and a sort of ambiguous swirling mix everywhere else. Temperature? Warm. Plenty warm. And then it started sprinkling.

Was I about to open the door, leave the house and drive an hour and 20 minutes only to find a cold wet mess? It was kind of risky. No one wants to blow a whole Saturday on a hunch.

NOAA Hi-Def Radar to the Rescue

So on this day I pulled out my iPad (works with iPhone, too) and fired up NOAA Hi-Def Radar. I zoomed into the mountain area where we were headed. Sure enough, there was rain there, moving through. Not a lot, but it was there. This proved that, no matter what, we would show up and there would be wet bushes to contend with. Maybe muddy roads. But what it also showed was that the rain wasn't heavy, and that it wasn't hanging over the area. In fact, an hour later that morning when I checked the app again, the whole area was clear. Closest rain was 30 miles away. So we hit the road.

When we arrived, yes, the brush was wet. But no rain. And while we only found handful of huckleberries (too early in the season), we climbed an old fire outlook tower and had a great -- mostly dry -- day anyway.

I Used It Again

The next weekend I was 300 miles from home and called back to talk to a friend. His walnut tree had just lost a bunch of branches during a hail storm. Interesting. Then I received a text message from a friend of a friend who had their home, cars and crops hit by baseball-sized hail. And there was a picture to prove it. Wow. Big hail. Can't imagine being caught out in the open with something like that coming down. Because we were heading into the mountains to go camping on a mountain lake, I pulled out NOAA Hi-Def Radar. Our destination? Nothing. Totally clear. But 150 miles further along, the skies were apparently tearing open left and right. The NOAA Hi-Def Radar app was lighting up and flashing green, orange, and red, red, red like Rudolph crashing Santa's sleigh into a Christmas tree.

Wow. It really was storming back at home. I zoomed in and suddenly I saw all these weird polygon shapes -- triangles and distorted rectangles and pentagons. I tapped one, and a severe storm warning message came up with details. I tapped another and it was a flood watch warning with 39 minutes to go before the danger would pass.

But like I said, the weather was clear where we were heading. So went and had a great time.

And this, of course, is the sort of thing that makes NOAA Hi-Def Radar a great app.

Gliese 581g: A Potentially Habitable World or Not?
Jul 31st 2012, 12:00

"No matter what they say, it's just really hard to find a planet that's in this habitable zone that also has water, clouds, and is small enough that it doesn't have a lot of gravity," said St. Louis University's Paul Czysz. "There's about 100 million to a billion stars in our galaxy. ... It's like you're in the Atlantic ocean and [looking] for fish within just a six-foot circle of your boat."

There's been considerable debate over the existence of Gliese 581g ever since the discovery of the "Goldilocks" planet was first reported nearly two years ago, but new research claims to provide additional evidence that the potentially habitable "super-Earth" really is out there.

Gliese 581

The orbits of planets in the Gliese 581 system compared to those of our own solar system. The Gliese 581 star has about 30 percent the mass of our Sun, and the outermost planet is closer to its star than the Earth is to the Sun. The 4th planet, G, is a planet that could sustain life. The prospect of the extrasolar planet, which is said to orbit the red dwarf star Gliese 581, 22 light-years from Earth, is an exciting one. It's thought to lie in the star's "habitable zone," where liquid water could exist on the planet's surface. That, in turn, could mean that it might be able to support life.

"Our findings offer a very compelling case for a potentially habitable planet," said Steven Vogt, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz, at the time of the discovery in late September 2010. "The fact that we were able to detect this planet so quickly and so nearby tells us that planets like this must be really common."

'Liquid Water Is a Distinct Possibility'

Two weeks later, however, the controversy began when a European team declared that they could find no evidence of the planet in their own examination of the same planetary system.

Instead of six planets orbiting Gliese 581, the European researchers saw evidence only of the four that had previously been found, they said.

In this latest development, a new, expanded analysis led once again by Vogt generated results that the American researchers say do indeed support the existence of Gliese 581g.

"This signal has a False Alarm Probability of < 4 percent and is consistent with a planet ... orbiting squarely in the star's Habitable Zone at 0.13 AU, where liquid water on planetary surfaces is a distinct possibility," concludes the new paper, which was published online last week.

The question now is, which of these two accounts gets the story right?

'These Are All Experienced Observers'

"It is extremely difficult for an outsider to assess which of the two teams is correct," Mario Livio, a senior astrophysicist with the Space Telescope Science Institute, told TechNewsWorld.

"These are all experienced observers," Livio added. "The controversy, more that anything else, simply demonstrates that the analysis of the data is extremely difficult."

Indeed, "the question is, is it there because the analysis says it is, or because they ran enough options that they finally got the solution they were looking for?" wondered Paul Czysz, professor emeritus of aerospace engineering with St. Louis University.

'Wiggles in the Light'

"When you're looking that far away, and inferring all kinds of orbits, and all you basically see are wiggles in the light coming from the sun," it's difficult to know what's actually being observed, Czysz told TechNewsWorld.

Essentially, the researchers assumed that "this little spike is a planet going in front of the sun, and then threw that into an analysis program to see what they get," he added.

Putting it more precisely, "the data set is the observed Doppler shifts of the star light that result from a component of the star's motion due to the gravitation pulls of multiple objects in orbit around the star," Scott Austin, associate professor of astronomy and director of the astronomical facilities at the University of Central Arkansas, told TechNewsWorld.

'There May Be Multiple Solutions Found'

"The goal is to create a computer model of this multi-body gravitational system that can recreate the observed wiggles in Doppler-shift versus time data," Austin explained.

However, "the more physics and physical parameters one includes in the model, the longer it takes to find a match to the data; there may also be multiple solutions found," he pointed out.

Complicating the situation further, the data itself has a level of uncertainty "due to the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra," Austin added. "How often the system was observed and over what length of time can also come into play."

In any case, the bottom line is that "some groups are making assumptions and simplifications to their model in order to speed up the solution search," he said.

The question then becomes, are those assumptions and simplifications valid, and do they produce a gravitationally stable system?

"The more complete modeling seems to suggest that the planet is there, but then the issue is proving that it is an actual detection versus unintentionally fitting the noise in the data," Austin concluded.

'It's Just Really Hard'

If the Vogt team's assumptions are correct, "it's possible there is a planet in this preferred zone," Czysz conceded. "The difficulty is, there really aren't very many planetary systems that have a good habitable zone.

"No matter what they say, it's just really hard to find a planet that's in this habitable zone that also has water, clouds, and is small enough that it doesn't have a lot of gravity," he pointed out.

Given the vast size of our galaxy, the odds are clearly against us.

"There's about 100 million to a billion stars in our galaxy," Czysz said. Potentially habitable planets are surely out there, "but it's like you're in the Atlantic ocean and [looking] for fish within just a six-foot circle of your boat."

'We're Still Babies Crawling on the Floor'

We also simply don't have the capability yet to go out and find such planets, Czysz added.

Crossing our galaxy so as to avoid its central supermassive black hole, for example, would take some 50,000 years, he pointed out.

"We need to figure out how Jean-Luc did it," Czysz said. "We know there is a way to do it -- the difficulty is that we'd have no way of understanding how one implements that. We're still babies crawling on the floor."

'More Planets Are Being Discovered'

As for Gliese 581g, "this probably isn't going to be sorted out until it is possible to get sufficiently high enough signal-to-noise data," Austin suggested.

At the same time, "given that many more extrasolar planets are being discovered now, the expectation is that quite a number of them will be in the habitable zones of their host stars," Livio pointed out. "This will make the question of whether planet Gliese 581g exists or not less critical."

Of course, if and when we do find such planets in habitable zones, there won't be any rush to begin packing our bags.

"There is a tendency for the public to come away with the impression that more is being claimed than what is actually being claimed," Austin warned. "'Planet in the habitable zone' does not equal 'a planet that is habitable by life found on the Earth.'"
